Ryan Murphy’s ‘Doctor Odyssey’ and ‘9-1-1’ Set Crossover Episode for March (EXCLUSIVE)

Athena Grant, meet Dr. Max Bankman.

On Thursday, March 20th, the universes created by Ryan Murphy for the shows “9-1-1,” where Angela Bassett plays LAPD sergeant Grant, and “Doctor Odyssey,” starring Joshua Jackson as ship doctor Bankman, will merge in a unique crossover episode. This event brings together the dramatic storylines of these two soapy, one being land-based and the other sea-focused, medical dramas.

In each episode of “Doctor Odyssey,” a different themed cruise is featured, and this time it’s Casino Week onboard The Odyssey. An uninvited guest named Athena Grant suspects that two passengers are planning to rob the ship’s safe, as outlined in the logline. To get Max involved, Athena ups the ante in a risky game where not every player will walk away with a winning outcome.

Although fans of “9-1-1” might find it surprising that Grant, played by Angela Bassett, quickly embarks on a ship journey following her and Bobby’s (Peter Krause) traumatic honeymoon cruise incident in Season 7 – however, both shows originate from the Murphy studio, which is known for incorporating crossover storylines.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated by how Ryan Murphy weaves his characters across different series, much like seeing venerable Marie Laveau from “American Horror Story: Coven” reappear in the 2018 “Apocalypse.” Similarly, the gripping drama of the firefighters from “9-1-1,” set in Los Angeles, found themselves aiding their counterparts in Texas during the run of “9-1-1: Lone Star.” And guess what? Murphy’s got another spinoff up his sleeve – “9-1-1: Nashville”! This new series has been given the green light and is slated to premiere on ABC during the 2025-2026 season.

In an extraordinary turn of events, I found myself captivated by a unique crossover episode featuring “9-1-1” and “Doctor Odyssey”. This is the first instance where two separate franchises created by the remarkable Murphy, who astonished us with six new shows in just two weeks back in 2024, have intertwined their stories.

The medical drama series titled “Doctor Odyssey,” featuring Jackson, Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale, has been a ratings success for ABC ever since it debuted last October, following the Season 8 premiere of “9-1-1.” Notably, “9-1-1” was the highest-watched broadcast show that evening, with an average viewership of 4.9 million people. Remarkably, “Doctor Odyssey” managed to capture 86% of that audience, translating to 4.2 million viewers, making it ABC’s most successful drama launch since “Big Sky” in 2020.

On Thursdays, you can catch “9-1-1” and “Doctor Odyssey” on ABC, starting at 8 PM. Both shows resume with fresh episodes on March 6.
