Ryan Higa reveals why he quit YouTube Rewind after being “lied to”

So, I found out Ryan Higa – NigaHiga to most of us – actually stopped being part of YouTube Rewind because they weren’t straight with him about what he’d be doing in one of the videos. Apparently, he was told one thing and it turned out to be totally different, which understandably made him bail.

Every year, social media sites like to share summaries of the year’s biggest trends. While Spotify Wrapped is now a popular highlight for many, YouTube actually started doing similar year-end recaps even earlier with its ‘Rewind’ series.

Rewind was YouTube’s annual video highlighting the most popular trends, creators, and memorable events from the past year.

The Rewind series began to lose popularity in 2019, as viewers increasingly disliked the videos, with negative reactions far exceeding positive ones. Ryan Higa, a popular YouTuber with over 25 million subscribers, was a frequent participant in the earlier Rewind videos but later stopped contributing, citing unreasonable and unpleasant requests.

Ryan Higa explains why he stopped doing YouTube Rewind

The streamer explained they stopped watching the show once they no longer needed to parody it. They had been involved in the first two installments and recalled walking off the set of a third one after discovering they’d been misled.

They asked me to dance in a scene, but I told them I wasn’t interested. They then had me film a different part, and after that, they tried to get me to do the dance scene again. I refused both times – I just didn’t want to dance.

I ended up leaving the shoot early. I got an Uber and just left, even while they were calling me, because we’d already discussed this. After that experience, I didn’t want to work with them again. They hadn’t been honest with me, and they tried to downplay the difficulties once I was on set, but I decided it wasn’t worth it.

Ryan Higa explained he stopped participating in YouTube Rewind because the creators weren’t truthful with him. He recalls walking off set during one shoot after being misled, and that’s why he never took part again. He specifically didn’t want to participate, and they didn’t respect his wishes.

The YouTuber felt it was unfair to be asked to do something he’d previously said he didn’t want to do, despite being willing to put in extra effort on shoots otherwise.

He explained that if someone tries to make you agree to something after you’ve specifically said you won’t, it’s really unfair, and he hasn’t forgotten that happening. He admits he doesn’t remember who he was dealing with at the time, but it frustrated him because he was already doing the work for free. That experience made him dislike YouTube Rewind ever since.

Ryan explained that after that initial request, he was asked to be involved in subsequent Rewinds, but he declined.

As of 2025, YouTube now offers viewers a personalized year-in-review, much like the one Twitch has been doing for some time.
