Everyone is talking about the man behind the new sci-fi blockbuster, Project Hail Mary. People are heading to cinemas to see it, while others are choosing to watch it from home on streaming services.
The Oscar-nominated actor has been in a lot of popular movies lately, and one of them, 2016’s The Nice Guys, is currently performing very well online. According to FlixPatrol, the action thriller recently jumped nine spots on iTunes, now ranking at number 11.
The movie The Nice Guys started at number 20 on the PVOD charts on March 24th, but quickly gained popularity. It’s also currently performing well internationally, ranking 6th in the Czech Republic, 20th in Sweden, and 25th in the UAE.
The new action movie faces a tough climb to reach the number one spot. Currently, a different film holds the top position, ending the run of Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid and also surpassing the recently released animated film GOAT, as well as Jason Statham’s Shelter.
The Nice Guys Was a Sleeper Hit
2016 was a breakthrough year for Ryan Gosling with the release of The Nice Guys and La La Land. While both films were successful, La La Land has become a modern classic, and Gosling consistently acknowledges how much he values being a part of it.
Despite a tough start, The Nice Guys unexpectedly became a success. Originally planned for release on June 17, 2016, it was moved to May 20th, putting it up against strong competition from Dwayne Johnson’s Central Intelligence. The Nice Guys also had to compete with Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Angry Birds Movie, which both performed well – the Neighbors sequel earned $108 million globally, and Angry Birds brought in $352 million.
Despite positive reviews – a 91% rating from critics and 79% from viewers – the film The Nice Guys wasn’t a box office success. It earned only $62.8 million, falling short of its $50 million production budget and ultimately finishing last in the competition.
The movie stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a private investigator and a hitman who join forces to find a missing teenager. Their search quickly becomes dangerous as they discover others are also looking for the girl, and someone connected to the case turns up dead.
The Nice Guys 2 Never Happened
Shane Black’s action comedy didn’t do well in cinemas initially, but it gained a following after becoming available to stream. It eventually became a cult classic, and many hoped for a sequel, given the film’s ending. Unfortunately, despite interest from those involved, a sequel never materialized.
The director recently explained in June 2015 that the biggest challenge is finding a studio to fund the project. He said it’s difficult to get actors to commit to a well-written script when the production will be very costly.
The director said the sequel would likely cost nearly double the original, because multiple producers and studios now own parts of the rights. They questioned whether it would be financially possible to make the film after paying everyone involved, including increased salaries for the actors.
The Nice Guys is available to rent or purchase on all digital platforms.
