Ryan Gosling Is Best Friends With a Mop Now

The sci-fi comedy Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, earned a remarkable $80.5 million domestically and $60.4 million internationally last weekend, making it the year’s biggest opening film to date. What’s surprising is that this film, which isn’t part of an existing franchise, easily outperformed all other movies in theaters.

Ryan Gosling has been playfully talking about a very unusual co-star while promoting his new film: a mop! He shared that, feeling lonely on set while playing a character isolated in space, he jokingly asked for a “scene partner.” The directors, Lord and Miller, surprisingly delivered – they created a mop with duct tape and glasses, affectionately named “Moppy Ringwald.” Gosling described having a wonderful day improvising and interacting with Moppy, and the directors were happy to accommodate his request, even pausing filming to do so. Surprisingly, some of this interaction actually made it into the final cut of the movie.

Ryan Gosling shared a story from an interview with IMDb about feeling lonely while working alone on set for around 100 days. He jokingly asked for a companion, suggesting he wanted to act scenes with a mop. The crew responded by creating a mop named ‘Moppy Ringwald’ just for him, and he spent the day playfully interacting with it – even ‘dancing’ with it. He noted that it’s rare for a director to accommodate such a request.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Ryan Gosling recounted feeling incredibly isolated during filming. He explained that after feeling alone for a long time, he simply needed someone to interact with. To solve this, the directors, Lord and Miller, playfully created a character out of a mop – dressing it in glasses and a dress and naming it ‘Moppy Ringwald.’ Gosling then spent the day improvising scenes, dancing, singing, and even crying with his new, unconventional scene partner.

Moppy Ringwald appears only briefly in the film, featured in a quick shot of her ‘dancing’ with Gosling during a montage showing Grace feeling isolated on the spaceship. But every part matters, even if it’s just a prop like a feather duster, and Gosling seems strangely fixated on this escaped mop. At this point, the movie could have just as easily been called Project Hail Moppy.
