Ryan Coogler Says He ‘Never’ Considered Making a ‘Sinners’ Sequel, Wanted to ‘Get Away’ From Franchise Films: ‘I Wanted It to Be a Holistic and Finished Thing’

Ryan Coogler has no interest in making a “Sinners” sequel.

In a recent conversation with Ebony Magazine, director Ryan Coogler, known for hit movies such as “Black Panther” and “Creed”, revealed that the idea of creating a sequel to his highly successful vampire thriller had never crossed his mind.

For some time now, I’ve been producing franchise movies,” Coogler shared. “However, I yearned for a change, so I sought an opportunity to work on a film that felt fresh and authentic to me, one that would offer something new and distinctive to viewers.

He explained, “I aimed for the film to provide a complete dining experience: the hors d’oeuvres, courses, main dish, and dessert – everything should be present. I wanted it to be a cohesive and polished product. This is what I was asked about it, and this was my plan all along.

During an interview with EbMaster, Coogger explained that the film “Sinners” resonates strongly with the kind of movies he enjoys the most.

Coogler expressed that this movie really resonates with him. He’s a fan of supernatural elements, and he’s immediately drawn in. He enjoys stories centered around communities, neighborhoods, and familiar character types. Plus, he’s fascinated by historical periods. When you combine all these aspects, it hits the spot for him.

The movie titled “Sinners” has earned over $350 million at the worldwide box office, placing it among the top 10 highest-earning films of the year. This remarkable success is quite noteworthy for a Warner Bros. production, given that the film is an entirely new story with no pre-existing intellectual property (IP).

The movie chronicles the story of siblings Smoke and Stack, portrayed by recurrent collaborator Michael B. Jordan. Upon returning to their hometown in Mississippi to establish a music venue, they encounter unexpected trouble – their venture is threatened by a swarm of vampires.

Apart from the main characters, you’ll also find Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and others in this extensive ensemble cast.
