88-year-old Ruth Buzzi, a lively and acclaimed comedian and voice actress famed for her role in “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” passed away last Thursday at her residence in Texas, as her family shared on Facebook.
The eccentric comedian graced every episode of the long-running variety program for five seasons, portraying characters like Gladys Ormphby – a frumpy woman always seen with a hairnet. On this show, she gained fame for using her handbag as a weapon to hit Arte Johnson’s filthy old man character on the park bench.
Buzzi earned a Golden Globe award and was nominated for five Emmys while performing on “Laugh-In.” The comedian, then just 30 years old, became well-known for her portrayal of an elderly character, explained to the AP in 2018, “Gladys represents the underdog. Gladys symbolizes those often ignored, oppressed, and undervalued, the ones who are struggling. Therefore, when she stands up for herself, she gives a voice to everyone who has ever been marginalized, objectified, or mistreated. And that’s essentially everyone at some point in their lives.
In 1993, Buzzi began working on “Sesame Street” as character Ruthie the shopkeeper. Over time, she also provided voices for other characters and appeared in various Sesame Street specials. Additionally, she made an appearance in the movie “The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.
She lent her voice to a wide range of roles, such as Nose Marie in “Pound Puppies” and Mama Bear in “The Berenstain Bears.
I, too, graced the small screen alongside Marlo Thomas on “That Girl,” portraying her character’s friend, Margie. You might have spotted me in various television shows across multiple episodes.
She made appearances in various films such as the original “Freaky Friday”, the “Lucky Luke” Western series, and both “Chu Chu and the Philly Flash” and “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again.
From 2021 onwards, Buzzi has kept herself busy with work. She has maintained a significant presence in the public sphere through her active Twitter account, regularly sharing witty one-liners to over 200,000 followers.
Born and brought up in Connecticut, Buzzi made her debut on stage at the age of 17 at the Pasadena Playhouse. Subsequently, she embarked on a journey as a comedian and singer alongside Rudy Vallee. Later, she shifted to New York City, where she graced numerous stages and appeared in various commercials.
Her debut on TV was on “The Garry Moore Show.” Later, she became a frequent guest on a variety of shows like “The Carol Burnett Show,” “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” and several others.
