Joel Souza, director of the film “Rust,” shares that he never thought another person would complete the Western movie following the unfortunate incident on set where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded when Alec Baldwin’s gun discharged accidentally, also injuring Souza. Three and a half years later, the movie is finally debuting in theaters this coming Friday.
Initially, Souza found the idea of returning to finish the movie distasteful, but as time passed, it became appealing instead. He couldn’t bear the thought of someone else taking over the project. However, due to Hutchins’ family wanting to honor her legacy by completing the Western with her final work, Souza ultimately agreed to carry on with the film.
Souza found it tough to get back to work as he stated, “I was disheveled upon entering and exiting. The team supported me throughout. My family supported me throughout. Mentally, I was going in many different directions.
In relation to the sequence of actions prior to the shooting, Souza expresses that “a series of poor choices were made,” and he regrets ever writing the film.
Souza confided to The Guardian that he didn’t catch “The Baldwins,” the latest reality series chronicling Baldwin and his kin, which aired during his involuntary manslaughter trial. Instead, he was apparently occupied by an unusual activity – whacking himself with a frying pan on the same evening. (It’s worth noting that the case ultimately concluded with a motion to drop it.)
The filming of “Rust” concluded with the collaboration of cinematographer Bianca Cline. However, Hutchins was listed as the second credit recipient, which is an uncommon position for a director of photography. Souza had been adamant about hiring a female cinematographer from the beginning, after being told that “Women can’t shoot Westerns.” He responded defiantly, saying, “I’m going to prove you wrong. I will make it a point to consider only women for this role.
