As a seasoned movie reviewer with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of filmmaking and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on the latest developments regarding Joe and Anthony Russo’s potential return to the MCU.
Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo behind the massive box office successes of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might make a comeback.
The filmmaking duo is currently in preliminary discussions to helm “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” for a 2026 release and “Avengers: Secret Wars” slated for 2027. These movies mark the conclusion of this phase, referred to as the Multiverse Saga, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s expected that these films will have interconnected storylines, much like the two-part tales of “Infinity War” (2018) and “Endgame” (2019).
Marvel Studios sought out talented filmmakers to oversee the production of their upcoming back-to-back projects following Destin Daniel Cretton’s exit from “The Kang Dynasty” in 2023. Shawn Levy, director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” was approached for the job but reportedly declined. As of now, Michael Waldron, the creator of “Loki,” is on board to pen the script for “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” No screenwriter has been appointed for “Secret Wars” yet.
I’ve been keeping an eye on the latest developments regarding “Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars.” With Jonathan Majors having brought multiple iterations of the infamous supervillain Kang, aka the MCU’s equivalent to Thanos, to life in shows like “Loki” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” on Disney+, it was only natural for speculation to ensue. However, things took an unexpected turn when Majors was charged with domestic harassment and assault. As a result, Marvel Studios decided to part ways with him.
The exact timeline for Marvel’s production start of the next “Avengers” installments remains undetermined. Following the release of “Endgame,” the Russo Brothers moved on to other projects. Their latest film is “The Electric State,” a sci-fi Netflix production with Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, which wrapped up shooting towards the end of 2022. After Marvel, they transitioned to streaming platforms, producing Netflix’s “The Gray Man” starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Apple TV+’s “Cherry” featuring Tom Holland. Additionally, they served as producers for Amazon’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Netflix’s “Citadel,” and Netflix’s “Extraction.”
The Russos have been in charge of four Marvel productions, among which are “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from 2014 and “Captain America: Civil War” released in 2016. Currently, “Avengers: Endgame,” which they also directed, is the second highest-grossing film of all time with earnings of approximately $2.79 billion. Meanwhile, “Infinity War,” another one of their projects, ranks sixth with a revenue of around $2.05 billion. They join James Cameron as the only directors to have two films each surpassing the $2 billion mark in box office sales.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the Russo Bros. involvement.
