It’s said that Russian officials are considering selling a large amount of confiscated Bitcoins, which they obtained during their investigations against a transnational cybercrime organization active from October 2010 to February 2018.
Based on local news sources, the government is set to get rid of approximately $10 million in Bitcoin initially, with plans to offload over 1,000 Bitcoins that are currently valued around $100 million.
Bitcoin Confiscated From Hackers
During an investigation into the well-known Infraud hacking organization, known for international credit card fraud schemes, the assets were discovered.
During the course of the investigation, authorities confiscated 5,212 BTC that were linked to the criminal group. Yet, there are allegations against one of the investigating officers, Major Marat Tambiev, who reportedly met with a lawyer representing several members of the Infraud organization and asked for half of the seized Bitcoin in return for not confiscating the remaining half and instead allowing the criminals to serve their sentences under house arrest.
Reports state that on April 7, 2022, Tambiev allegedly received around 1,032 Bitcoins. Following this transaction, he and his assistant, Kristina Lyakhovenko, were taken into custody. They were both indicted for bribery and sentenced accordingly – Tambiev was imprisoned in a maximum security facility for 16 years and fined more than $5 million. In the meantime, Lyakhovenko was given a nine-year sentence upon being convicted of tampering with evidence.
In 2023, police discovered that a folder labeled “Pension” on the computer of a disgraced officer contained the private keys to his Bitcoin savings. However, the Russian Treasury is trying to transfer these funds, but it seems they are facing difficulties due to legal obstacles in completely liquidating the Bitcoin stash.
It’s claimed that Tambiev divided his illegal earnings into multiple smaller sums and stored them in different digital wallets. This means that prosecutors may need to submit numerous petitions to the court to gain access to each individual amount.
Additionally, it’s reported that the former investigator allegedly gave some of the coins to his relatives, leading to a case being filed by the Prosecutor-General’s office against him and one of his uncles. The initial sale was permitted by the court, allowing the prosecutors to dispose of the first batch.
As a researcher, I’ve discovered that the authorities are also considering the sale of additional assets associated with Tambiev, such as real estate and automobiles.
Silk Road BTC Could Hit the Market
As a researcher, I’ve recently come across some intriguing information: The U.S. Justice Department has been given authorization to offload approximately 69,000 digital coins, valued at around $6.5 billion. A significant portion of these assets are believed to have originated from the now-defunct Silk Road online marketplace. This move comes contrary to advice given by President-elect Donald Trump, who has urged the current administration not to dispose of any cryptocurrency in their possession. He and his associates are reportedly planning to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve instead.
Russian legislators have put forward a comparable suggestion for a country-owned Bitcoin reserve, spurred on by President Vladimir Putin’s open endorsement of the digital currency during an investment conference held in Moscow.
