Russell Crowe’s recent World War II film, Nuremberg, is surprisingly doing very well in theaters. Following a busy 2025 with films like Land of Bad and Kraven the Hunter, Crowe appeared in just one movie in 2026 – this historical thriller. Many are calling it his most unsettling performance to date, as he plays Hermann Göring, Adolf Hitler’s right-hand man.
The movie Nuremberg came out in the US on November 7, 2025, but didn’t perform well at the box office, earning around $15 million. However, according to Variety, it was much more successful internationally, bringing in over $31 million worldwide, with $8 million of that coming from Italy alone. The film hasn’t been released in Germany and France yet, and those releases are expected to increase its overall earnings.
Russell Crowe’s latest film has earned $46 million worldwide, making it a profitable hit for Sony Pictures Classics, especially considering its relatively low budget of $7-10 million. It’s proven to be a surprising success, even surpassing the box office results of other acclaimed Sony Pictures Classics films like The Smashing Machine ($21.1 million) and Bugonia ($41 million).
Russell Crowe’s recent films haven’t been very successful in theaters. His movie Kraven the Hunter was a significant flop, earning only $62 million despite costing between $110 and $130 million to make. Nuremberg would have been his first major theatrical hit since The Pope’s Exorcist, which earned $77 million worldwide. However, many of his films in 2025 were smaller projects that did well on streaming services, like Land of Bad.
Several things likely helped Nuremberg do well in international theaters. Because the film is set during World War II, the story resonated with audiences in Europe. While positive buzz definitely played a role, it’s unusual for a film to gain better reviews over time, which Nuremberg did.
The film Nuremberg initially received negative reactions when it premiered at TIFF in September 2025, starting with a low score in the 40s on Rotten Tomatoes. But as the release date approached, opinions shifted dramatically. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score climbed to 72%, a rare turnaround. Viewers loved it even more, giving it a 95% rating on the Popcornmeter.
Reviews for Nuremberg mentioned the show moves slowly at times, but Russell Crowe received a lot of positive attention. Despite a strong supporting cast including Rami Malek, Leo Woodall, and Colin Hanks, Crowe’s performance as a key Nazi figure was particularly impressive and could earn him awards. He’s already been longlisted for the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor.
Despite being in his early 60s, Russell Crowe remains very active. In addition to the upcoming premiere of The Weight at Sundance, he’s already finished filming The Beast in Me, Bear Country, and Billion Dollar Spy.
James Vanderbilt directed and wrote this historical film, which centers on psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, played by Rami Malek. Kelley’s task is to evaluate key Nazi officials, including Hermann Göring, to decide if they are mentally capable of participating in the Nuremberg trials. The movie is based on Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.
The film Nuremberg is now available to rent or buy online in the US. A release date for streaming hasn’t been announced yet.
