The London Metropolitan Police have brought charges against Russell Brand, accusing him of sexual assault, rape, and indecent assault.
The charges relate to four separate women and incidents that took place between 1999 and 2005.
As reported by the police, the comedian and actor has been questioned on several occasions following an extensive probe triggered by grave accusations against him, which came to light in September 2023 through investigative reports published by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
The 50-year-old has previously denied the allegations.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police, in charge of the ongoing investigation, stated that women who have filed reports are still being assisted by specially trained officers. He encourages anyone impacted by this case or having relevant information to contact the police.
Brand is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
2023 unveiled a revealing account – a 90-minute documentary and an accompanying article in The Times – that levied accusations against Brand concerning “rape, sexual misconduct, and emotional torment.” Representatives for the show affirmed that five women, four of whom wished to remain confidential, came forward to share their harrowing tales of severe sexual misconduct within the program.
Following the release of the report, Brand’s upcoming tour was delayed, and his publishing agreement with the Pan Macmillan imprint Bluebird was temporarily halted. Additionally, the BBC decided to take off certain past shows featuring Brand from their digital platforms, stating that the material did not meet the public’s standards.
Earlier this year, BBC issued an apology to their staff members who found it challenging to voice complaints or concerns regarding Brand’s conduct during his tenure with the broadcasting company, following a thorough internal probe.
Based on BBC reports, their investigation looked into eight grievances, two of which were lodged during Brand’s tenure at the BBC. One issue involved Brand urinating into a cup during a show on BBC Radio 2, a complaint that was formally recorded but not handled appropriately according to the BBC. Another point raised in the report was an accusation that Brand had exposed himself to a woman in the bathroom of the BBC’s L.A. office.
