Rupert Everett, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Jeremy Irvine and Layton Williams Join Ballroom Dancing Rom-Com ‘The Light Fantastic’

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply and dance sequences that leave me spellbound, I find myself intrigued by “The Light Fantastic.” Having grown up in Blackpool, the vibrant heart of Britain’s ballroom scene, I’ve seen my fair share of sequins, spins, and swivels. The prospect of a film set against this backdrop, with its unique blend of tradition and rebellion, is tantalizing indeed.

Actors Rupert Everett, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Jeremy Irvine, and Layton Williams have been cast for the upcoming comedy movie titled “The Light Fantastic,” which takes place within the realm of ballroom dancing. Rupert Everett is known for his roles in films like “My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Under the guidance of BAFTA TV award-winning director Chris Cottam (“The Problem With People”), and written by Lee Warburton (“Shameless,” “This Is Going to Hurt”), this film is being introduced at the American Film Market. Cornerstone, handling global distribution, will be in charge of its worldwide sales.

Based on real events, the movie “The Light Fantastic” portrays the life of Jason (Irvine), a 30-something firefighter with a secret dream: to be a professional ballroom dancer, despite being gay. The story unfolds in the lively Blackpool, a British seaside town. In this setting, Jason grapples with the strict norms of the ballroom scene under the scrutiny of his old-fashioned mentor Reynolds (Everett). As he navigates this journey of self-exploration, he learns to heed the whispers of his heart before he can move gracefully in tune with its beat.

The movie titled ‘The Light Fantastic’ is being made by Genesius Pictures and is being overseen by Debbie Gray, a BAFTA-winning producer known for her work on ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ and ‘Four Letters of Love’. Production for this film will start in early 2025 right here in the U.K.

The dance choreography will be handled by Mark and Shirley Ballas, the highly esteemed mother-son duo who are renowned in the realm of dance. Notably, Shirley Ballas is a triple British Open to the World Latin American champion, a 10-time United States Latin American champion, and a multiple British National champion. She has also received three Carl Alan Awards, The EbMaster Club ‘Legends of Industry’ Award, and serves as head judge on BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing.” Mark Ballas, on the other hand, is an Emmy-nominated choreographer, musician, and actor, who has won two World Choreography awards and triumphed thrice on “Dancing With the Stars.

‘The Light Fantastic’ is a humorous, inspiring musical rom-com that emphasizes the transformative power of dance,” Gray stated. “This movie focuses on the significance of love, understanding, and tolerance in overcoming prejudice, hatred, and fear. It aims to be a radiant and energetic production that will encourage everyone to join in the singing and dancing.

Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder from Cornerstone commented: “Our initial AFM (American Film Market) event in Las Vegas titled ‘The Light Fantastic,’ which blends dance, humor, and fantastic tunes, is an absolutely ideal match for potential buyers.

Each of the following actors is managed by a different talent agency: Irvine by Independent Talent Group, Everett by The Artists Partnership, Stewart-Jarrett by Curtis Brown (also represented by Gersh and Anonymous Content), Gersh being shared with Williams, WME, and 42MP. Cottam is represented by Gersh as well, while Warburton is managed by The Agency.
