Jagex, the company behind the popular online game RuneScape, has announced it won’t be using AI to create any of the game’s content, for either the classic or newer versions.
The studio behind RuneScape and Old School RuneScape has stated it won’t use generative AI directly in the games themselves. However, they may use it internally to help their teams work more efficiently and improve their tools.
James Dobrowski, a senior vice president at Jagex, recently spoke with GamesIndustry.biz about how the company is deciding when and how to use AI, and what that means for players and future game development.
RuneScape dev wants to ensure “no AI is being used in inappropriate ways”
Jagex has stated they won’t use generative AI to create new ideas or content – like graphics, music, or anything else players use directly within their games.
Dobrowski explained that while they might use AI tools to help developers create games, the games themselves won’t contain any content actually created by AI.

We’re exploring how AI can help us work smarter, not harder,” said Dobrowski. “Specifically, we’re looking at AI tools to improve our efficiency, make things easier for our team, and ultimately create higher-quality content.
Dobrowski acknowledged AI’s potential, but emphasized that they don’t want to rely on it for creative work.
The vice president explained that the checks will also include Jagex, a partner company, as they investigate whether artificial intelligence is being misused.
Jagex marked RuneScape’s 25th anniversary in January by sharing a detailed plan for upcoming game improvements.
So, big news for Old School RuneScape! Over the weekend, the devs dropped their roadmap for the year, which is awesome. But even bigger news – a UK court actually ruled that in-game gold can be considered property! Basically, if someone steals your gold, it’s legally considered theft now. Pretty wild stuff!
