On Thursday, the European media group RTL reported relatively consistent annual earnings for the fiscal year 2024, primarily bolstered by over a 40% increase in streaming income and robust returns from advertisements.
The main entity, largely controlled by the German conglomerate Bertelsmann, reported a group revenue of approximately €6.3 billion ($6.8 billion) for the year 2024, representing a decrease of 1.5% compared to the previous year’s earnings. They anticipate generating around €6.45 billion euros ($7.03 billion) in revenue by the year 2025.
Total RTL group profit amounted to €555 million ($603 million).
RTL’s yearly streaming revenue climbed by 42% to reach €403 million (approximately $437 million USD), largely fueled by a 21% rise in subscribers from Germany, Hungary, and France. Additionally, the company reported a decrease in losses associated with starting up its streaming service, paving the way for projected profitability of this sector by 2026.
The group reported significant increases in advertising income for its RTL+ platform in Germany and M6+ in France, as stated.
In his statement, CEO Thomas Rabe shared that our streaming services and content production business have hit crucial milestones. He anticipates these advancements will lead to a substantial boost in our operational earnings over the next few years.
Speaking about Fremantle, the international content division of RTL, there was a small decrease in revenue from approximately €2,266 billion in 2023 to €2,254 billion ($2,449 billion) in 2024. However, Rabe stated that “Thanks to substantial cost cuts and the addition of Asacha Media Group, acquired in 2024, Fremantle achieved a record performance and enhanced its Adjusted EBITA margin significantly.” Rabe further mentioned that “our goal is to raise Fremantle’s margin to 9% by 2026.

According to RTL’s perspective, Fremantle aims to attain an annual revenue of €3 billion in the intermediate period, which involves acquiring small and medium-sized production companies and collaborating with creative talent. However, it remains unclear exactly when this target is expected to be achieved.
The team anticipates securing necessary regulatory clearances for the sale of RTL Nederland, which was agreed upon at the end of 2023, and completing a previously announced deal worth approximately €1.1 billion during the second quarter of the current year.
