As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for unconventional comedy and a soft spot for trailblazers, I find Roy Wood Jr.’s venture into hosting “Have I Got News For You” on CNN an exhilarating prospect. The idea of comedians tackling news headlines on a network that’s traditionally known for its seriousness is as audacious as it is intriguing.
Roy Wood Jr. is set to debut a fresh comedy series, where individuals often considered unfunny are given a platform to make jokes on a channel not typically associated with humor.
“I like comedy in tough places,” quips Wood.
As a movie buff, I’m excited to share that I’ve stumbled upon something fascinating! CNN is set to debut Wood as the host of “Have I Got News For You,” which is the U.S. adaptation of a popular British comedy series. In this show, two teams consisting of comedians, newsmakers, actors, and media personalities engage in an improvised battle of wits using current news clips and headlines to concoct jokes and gags. Each week, Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black will lead the teams as team captains. Can’t wait for the premiere!
One potential factor to broaden the show’s audience, as suggested by Wood, is inviting controversial figures, including newsmakers. Though Americans may not always appreciate giving a platform to ‘unfavorable individuals,’ Wood explains that ” fundamentally, this is about humor and who will provide it?” If we can consistently combine these two elements in each episode, then the show could potentially stay on air for an extended period.
Although CNN might often be featured in “Saturday Night Live” sketches, it’s not generally recognized as a particularly humorous network on its own. However, over the years, its executives have dabbled in programming with a more lighthearted approach. For instance, in 2008 and 2009, CNN aired a program hosted by comedian D.L. Hughley. Additionally, the CNN documentary series “United Shades of America” was helmed by comedian and activist W. Kamau Bell, who previously hosted a weekly comedy show on FX and FXX. In 2019, CNN provided an opportunity for comedian Colin Quinn to present a one-time special.
Since “Have I Got News For You” has been airing on the BBC since 1990, executives at CNN believed it was a suitable addition to their programming lineup. As stated by Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content at CNN, they felt confident because the show has been in the hands of seasoned professionals who will oversee the U.S. version. She expressed during an interview that they felt they had the liberty to give it a try, and their audience would grant them this opportunity.
As a devoted movie-goer, I must admit that CNN has skillfully paved the way for an engaging weekend viewing experience. For quite some time now, they’ve been showcasing Bill Maher’s HBO program, “Real Time,” every Saturday evening. This strategic move seems to have acclimatized viewers to a more candid, critical, and satirical approach – a far cry from typical network programming. Intriguingly, Entelis hints that this program is instrumental in drawing fresh crowds to CNN on Saturdays.
Additionally, Fox News Channel has experimented with comedy and found it to be effective. The network airs not just a weekly comedy show hosted by Jimmy Failla on Saturdays, but also the popular primetime discussion panel led by Greg Gutfeld, which is one of their highest-rated shows.
Audience members have become familiar with unexpected guests appearing on comedy shows, according to Wood. Occasionally, even “SNL” invites a guest who stirs up controversy. In recent times, executive producer Lorne Michaels has approved hosts like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Dave Chappelle, and Shane Gillis for their episodes.
Wood desires a figure similar to Eric Adams or Ted Cruz who can comfortably support vaccinations and respond assertively if needed. If someone disagrees, they are welcome to express their views, as the goal is to encourage open discussion. Essentially, Wood hopes that this platform will foster such healthy debate.
On Saturdays, television ratings don’t peak as high. Broadcast networks often air reruns and college football during prime time hours. In 2013, CNN encountered similar difficulties on Sundays when they chose to fill their schedule with documentary series featuring Anthony Bourdain, among others. This has since become a significant component of CNN’s programming. Maher and Wood could potentially set a new tone for Saturday evenings, as I see it.
One way to rephrase this could be: “Wood mentions that one reason for leaving ‘Daily’ is because he found an opportunity like this, which he had been eagerly waiting for. He also felt that leaving before the election year was a smart move. According to him, if there was a good opportunity for him, it would materialize during an election year rather than afterwards.
Comedic news has flourished, but usually not on the news outlets. People have embraced “The Daily Show,” “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver and the “Weekend Update” segment of “SNL.” When subscribers to Max, the streaming hub owned by Warner, choose the “news” section, they are offered access to past episodes of Oliver’s and Maher’s HBO series, along with the choice to stream CNN. Getting CNN viewers to grab hold shouldn’t be too difficult, says Wood. “This idea that comedy and news can’t coexist? I think it’s a myth.”
