Rotterdam Winner Cyrielle Raingou Finds French Backing for Fiction Debut ‘I’m Coming for You’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As an admirer of the vibrant and inspiring world of cinema, I am deeply moved by the extraordinary journey of Cyrielle Raingou, a talented filmmaker whose powerful storytelling brings light to the resilient spirits of women in challenging circumstances. Her latest project, “Pour toi je reviendrai” or “I’m Coming for You,” is a testament to her unwavering commitment to highlighting the struggles and triumphs of those often overlooked by society.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Cyrielle Raingou, the talented winner of the Rotterdam Film Festival with her film “Le Spectre de Boko Haram,” has successfully secured French backing for her new project titled “Pour toi je reviendrai” or “I’m Coming for You.” This compelling story follows a resilient single mother from northern Cameroon who, after being ostracized from her community, bravely joins forces with a powerful group of local women. Currently, Raingou is pitching this captivating project at the Durban FilmMart this week.

Raingou and Alice Abah, the film’s producers, will create the production for Je Capture Ma Réalité, the Cameroon-based studio of the director, in collaboration with SaNoSi Productions led by French producer Jean-Marie Gigon. Gigon boasts an impressive resume, having worked on Netflix’s “Freda” by Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus, which was submitted to the 2022 Oscars, and “In the Rearview,” a Ukrainian war documentary by Maciek Hamela, which made it to this year’s Oscar shortlist.

The picture will additionally be produced in collaboration with Canal+, who have purchased the rights to distribute it in Africa, Haiti, and French territories abroad. The French version of the film is yet to be sold.

“Kaltoumi’s Journey,” a first film by its director, introduces us to this young mother and engineer living in a traditional society where magic holds significant power. Longing for the liberty many women in her community are denied, she makes an unconventional purchase – a motorbike. With newfound independence, she roams the Sahel region undetected.

In the vast Sahelian region between Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, Kaltoumi finds herself a single mother to her three-month-old child, deserted by her husband. To survive, she is compelled to collaborate with terrorists from Boko Haram in trafficking goods. However, her illicit activities are exposed when a village chief apprehensively seizes her baby and imposes a debilitating curse upon her.

Exiled from her community, she embarks on a quest for a miraculous healing, teaming up with a rebellious band of females who battle against terrorists and oppressive societies that subjugate women entirely to male rule.

In a conversation with EbMaster in Durban, Raingou expressed that her upcoming film serves as a tribute to women. She emphasized, “Regardless of the limitations society imposes on us, we possess the ability to define ourselves. My film conveys this message. Seize control; they won’t hand it to you. Embrace your identity and be who you truly want to be.”

The movie is a follow-up to Raingou’s acclaimed debut, marking the first African film to receive Rotterdam’s Tiger Award. This thought-provoking production focuses on three schoolchildren in war-torn northern Cameroon, living in the shadows of conflict instigated by the notorious militant group in its title. According to Murtada Elfadl from EbMaster, “Spectre” offers a candid portrayal of how routine activities persist even with the ever-present danger of violence.

In the making of “I’m Coming for You,” the director drew inspiration from her encounters with women in her native Cameroon’s northern regions. She observed their remarkable resilience and creativity, despite living in a place where opportunities are scarce for women. The unforgiving conditions of the Sahel desert have compelled many to engage with the very militants who have long disrupted their communities, according to Raingou.

She found motivation from the real-life resilience of women in strictly patriarchal and traditional societies, who defy being pigeonholed as mere submissive figures. In this project, these women face two oppressors – terrorism and the patriarchy – that aim to suppress them. Their struggle is to find a means of liberation.

“The film ‘I’m Coming for You’ has been recognized with awards and financial support from the Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Kirch Foundation, FILMAC, Visions Sud Est, and the French Institute of Cameroon. It has already been purchased by Canal+ and Chad’s national broadcaster Télé Tchad. Raingou is currently looking for a sales agent, European co-producers, and distributors in North America, Europe, and Asia, with plans to start filming as early as 2025.”

The Durban FilmMart runs from July 19 – 22.
