As a cinephile who has traversed the labyrinthine world of films for decades, I find myself captivated by the diverse offerings at this year’s film festival. The narratives, as they discuss art, time, and life itself, resonate deeply with my own journey through the lens.
The International Film Festival Rotterdam has revealed the initial group of films chosen for its 54th installment, happening from January 30 to February 9. These 13 movies, showcased in either the Bright Future or Harbour segments, will all make their world debut at IFFR.
As a cinephile, I’d say Bright Future is all about showcasing fresh, debut feature films, whereas Harbour provides a diverse array of contemporary movies that span the spectrum of modern cinema.
The first wave of titles includes several IFFR alumni, including Daniel Hoesl, a former Tiger Award winner for micro-budget experimental feature “Soldate Jeannette,” with his new work “Un gran casino”; Hubert Bals Fund awardee Pelin Esmer, who returns to the festival with a world premiere of “And the Rest Will Follow”; Christina Friedrich presenting “The Night Is Dark and Brighter Than the Day,” which comes after her IFFR debut this year with “Zone”; and avant-garde trailblazer Alexander Kluge returns, after the world premiere of “Cosmic Miniatures” in the most recent edition of the festival, with “Primitive Diversity” for the 2025 instalment. Kluge, who began his career as an assistant to Fritz Lang, was awarded a Golden Lion at Venice in 1968 for “Artists Under the Big Top: Perplexed.”
The collection titled “Bright Future” features Lilly Hu’s first full-length film, “1 Girl Infinite,” which is a Chinese drama about the queer community, and has Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”) acting in an executive producer role.
Vanja Kaludjercic, the festival director at IFFR, expressed delight in collaborating with their programming team to compile a diverse array of films that encompass numerous cinematic journeys and various viewpoints. This initial group of film selections reflects their dedication to fulfilling this objective.
Additionally, it’s evident that this platform serves as a significant stepping stone each year for films that prosper commercially and critically after their premiere at IFFR. We are thrilled to support and applaud the advancement of the movies we showcased in our 2024 edition.
Over at Bright Future and Harbour, you’ll find a diverse mix of both upcoming and well-established talents, a vibrant fusion of genres, and heartfelt narratives. We’re confident that these discoveries will captivate our passionate and inquisitive fans.
The complete program will be launched on Dec. 17.

HARBOUR
Following the Premiere (World First Showing), the Film is titled “And the Rest Will Follow” directed by Pelin Esmer. This movie hails from Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania. The central character, Aliye, a daydreamer in her role as a housekeeper at a hotel, often finds herself immersed in the lives of the guests. However, an encounter with a renowned filmmaker inspires Aliye to believe she too has a story worth sharing. This belief sets off a chain of events involving multiple lives and the blurring of reality and fiction.
