Rosie O’Donnell’s Hacks Cameo Finally Delivers on a 3-Year Fan-Favorite Promise

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Hacks season 4, episode 6.

In episode 6 of season 4 titled “Mrs. Table,” Rosie O’Donnell made an unexpected appearance on the TV series “Hacks.” This came after she had been a guest on the official “Hacks” podcast in June 2022. Notably, this was her first role in a scripted TV comedy since her stint on Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” in 2023. In the Emmy-winning series, she portrayed herself and interacted with Jean Smart’s character Deborah Vance. During their scenes together, Deborah was introduced to an award called “Courage in Comedy,” which she perceived as a strategic move by the network to boost her late-night ratings.

Following season 4 of Hacks, Cynthia O’Donnell is anticipated to portray Mary in And Just Like That… season 3, airing on HBO and MAX on May 29, 2025. In the sixth episode of Hacks season 4, their initial scene together, Deborah and Rosie (played by O’Donnell) share laughter as if they’ve been friends for ages, with Rosie teasing Deborah as “The bravest woman in comedy.” Much like Carol Burnett’s appearance in season 4, episode 4, O’Donnell offers Deborah some words of wisdom about savoring “every little victory” in the ruthless world of Hollywood. However, the bluntly honest Deborah can’t help but view it as a hollow award, to which O’Donnell confesses she has many such trinkets herself.

Rosie O’Donnell’s Hacks Season 4 Cameo Arrived 3 Years After Her Official Podcast Appearance With The Creators

She Was A Self-Proclaimed “Superfan” Of Hacks Back In Season 2

Prior to making an appearance in season 4, Rosie O’Donnell first became a part of the Hacks universe as a special guest and avowed fan of the series on The Official Hacks Podcast. In an interview and recap of season 2, episode 6 with creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, O’Donnell took on the role of guest host to delve into the episode titled “The Click.” It was mentioned at the outset of their discussion that O’Donnell had personally contacted the Hacks creators to express her enthusiasm for the show, a sentiment that is clearly reflected in her season 4 cameo.

Given the extensive backing O’Donnell provided to the show ‘Hacks’ during season 2, it’s a bit unexpected that her appearance as a guest star took so long. Yet, it seems fitting that she would be part of season 4, which boasts some of the most prominent guest stars in the series’ history so far, like Kristen Bell, Jimmy Kimmel, and Merrill Markoe. It’s worth noting that O’Donnell previously made appearances as herself on the popular HBO comedy show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, starring Larry David, numerous times during its 12-season run. Additionally, she has been cast in other critically acclaimed series such as ‘Russian Doll’ and ‘I Know This Much Is True’.

Rosie O’Donnell’s Hacks Cameo Has A Deeper Meaning In Deborah’s Story

O’Donnell Was A Legendary Trailblazer For Female Hosts On Television

In episode 6 of season 4, Rosie O’Donnell’s appearance on Hacks follows a pattern set by Carol Burnett and Merrill Markoe earlier in the season. Similar to Burnett, host of the groundbreaking and forward-thinking “The Carol Burnett Show,” and Markoe, a prominent head writer for Late Night with David Letterman, Rosie O’Donnell is recognized as a pioneer for women in the entertainment industry. Known for her dominance on TV screens during the ’90s and ’00s, O’Donnell’s presence in Hacks serves to commemorate her influential legacy. Although Deborah is a fictional character, she embodies these trailblazers who have cleared the path for women in television.

Despite achieving great success as a stand-up comedian and entertainer throughout her career, Deborah’s ultimate ambition has always been to host a late-night talk show. In what some might consider the latter stages of her career, she finally achieved this dream. It’s worth noting that in the real world, very few women have held the position of late-night show host; however, the character Deborah plays in Hacks has reached heights beyond those achievable in reality. Taylor Tomlinson recently made history by becoming the first woman to host a mainstream game show, After Midnight.

In the 1970s, during her twenties, Deborah was given a chance to host a late-night show that was modeled after an untruthful slur made by her ex-husband. The characters like Burnett, Markoe, and O’Donnell portrayed in Hacks pay tribute to their significant influence in the real world.
