Roman Polanski No Longer Going on Trial in L.A. Over Alleged 1973 Rape of Minor

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of controversies surrounding the lives and careers of filmmakers. However, the saga of Roman Polanski has been one that has captivated me more than any scripted drama could.

According to the French news agency AFP, Roman Polanski will not face trial in Los Angeles next year for the alleged 1973 rape of a minor; instead, this case appears to be closed.

Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, the director’s lawyer, informed AFP on Tuesday that the case against the director was resolved amicably between the parties over the summer and is now officially closed. The director was previously scheduled for a trial in August 2025.

Gloria Allred, the attorney for the unnamed plaintiff, also shared with AFP that “the parties involved reached an agreement to settle their disputes, which they found satisfactory on both ends.

The legal claim submitted in June 2023 accuses Roman Polanski of sexually assaulting Jane Doe back in 1973, when she was a minor. As the lawsuit states, the plaintiff had previously met Polanski at a gathering, and he later invited her for dinner, offered her tequila shots, and then drove her to his residence in Benedict Canyon. At his house, she fell asleep on his bed.

According to the court case, the plaintiff recalls finding herself in the defendant’s bed, with him beside her. He expressed his desire for sexual activity. Although the plaintiff was drowsy, she made it clear that she did not consent by saying ‘No.’ She also asked him politely not to proceed.

The woman came forward at a 2017 press conference with Allred, where she was identified as Robin M., and said she was 16 when the alleged incident occurred. Polanski denied the claim through his attorney, saying in a statement at the time: “Mr. Polanski strenuously denies the allegations in the lawsuit and believes that the proper place to try this case is in the courts.”

Roman Polanski has been living outside the U.S. since 1978 due to his status as a fugitive, which meant he couldn’t attend the trial in person. Instead, he had to participate through a live video link because he left the country right before sentencing for the rape of a 13-year-old girl. Since then, he has been wary of returning to the U.S., as his arrest was imminent. Over the years, attempts to settle the criminal case and extradite him have proven futile.

More recently, Roman Polanski had been on trial for defamation in Paris due to accusations by actress Charlotte Lewis that he had sexually assaulted her when she was just 16 years old. In an interview with French magazine Paris Match in 2019, Polanski denied these allegations, calling them a “vile lie.” This statement led Lewis to file a defamation lawsuit against him. However, in May, he was found not guilty of the charges brought against him.
