As a long-time admirer of Rola Bauer’s impressive career trajectory, I can only applaud her bold decision to step down from her role at Amazon MGM Studios. With a rich background that spans continents and industries, Bauer has consistently demonstrated an uncanny knack for identifying and nurturing exceptional television content.
Notable television figure, Rola Bauer, has chosen to leave her position as head of non-U.S. produced English-language original series at Amazon MGM Studios.
Bauer, who is experienced in production and executive roles, initiated a friendly departure and joined MGM as president of international TV production in 2020. However, after Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, the focus of her role shifted towards a particular kind of content called Pan-English global originals. These are English projects produced outside the U.S. The main objective for these productions is to create high-quality event series that can easily be adapted and enjoyed across various territories and cultures.
After Amazon and MGM refine their corporate structure and strategic plans, Bauer felt it was the right moment to go back to creating and packaging content for entrepreneurial ventures. Bauer’s executive team will be integrated into the broader Amazon Studios organization. Bauer will play a key role in guiding this transition and supervising the initial launches of projects from this new group. The executive who balanced her time between Munich and Amazon’s U.S. office is expected to officially depart during the first quarter.
One of the standout collections of shows that Bauer’s team has put together for Amazon Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios includes “Harlan Coben’s Lazarus” featuring Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy, the series “Haven,” starring Sophie Turner from “Game of Thrones,” the comedy series “Quarter Life” led by Riz Ahmed, and “The Girlfriend” with Robin Wright in both the lead role and directing duties, alongside Olivia Cooke.
Previously, Bauer oversaw the television production branch of Studiocanal for France’s Canal+. She assumed this role following Canal+’s acquisition of the prosperous Tandem Productions label, which Bauer and producer Tim Halkin established together back in 1999.
Initially, Bauer – hailing from Canada – held the position of a creative executive at Alliance Communications in Toronto. Subsequently, she shifted her base to Germany and took up a role with ProSeven, a prominent German TV network. Here, she managed international series and supervised co-production agreements.
Six months into her tenure at MGM, Bauer addressed the struggling co-production marketplace, impacted by COVID-19, during a virtual talk moderated by EbMaster for the Monte-Carlo Television Festival. The topics Bauer touched upon might provide insights into her future endeavors.
In December 2020, Bauer stated that since not every entity can shoulder all the financial responsibilities of a budget, it’s even more crucial to have various market participants other than the large streaming companies.
