As a fan who has been deeply moved by stories of camaraderie and kindness, I can’t help but be touched by Robin Williams‘ act of generosity towards Conan O’Brien. In a time when the world seemed to be crashing down on him, Robin took it upon himself to lift Conan’s spirits, reminding us all that even in the darkest times, there are those who shine brightly.
On a recent episode of “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Conan O’Brien shared an interesting story. He mentioned that Robin Williams, following his dismissal as the host of “The Tonight Show”, unexpectedly reached out to him. In 2009, O’Brien had taken over the late-night show from Jay Leno, but he was let go by NBC after just seven months. The network opted to reinstate Leno instead.
Connie O’Brien recounted that he had fortunate encounters with Robin Williams before his demise. One instance that stood out to him was during his ‘Tonight Show’ turmoil. After the show ended, and he wasn’t sure if he still had a career, he found himself lying on his living room floor, wondering what would be next in life. Suddenly, his phone rang, and it was Robin Williams who called.
O’Brien added, ‘I can’t figure out how he got my number.’ Williams then asked, ‘How are you doing, boss?’ To which he replied, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll do well and be excellent.’
Later on, Williams asked O’Brien to head over to the bike store in Santa Monica, as Williams had arranged for him to borrow a bike for the day. As passionate cyclists themselves, these two men looked forward to their upcoming ride.
O’Brien recalled saying, ‘What?’ in response. To which he replied, ‘Never mind, never mind, just go ahead. Take a spin, it’ll lift your spirits.’ So I went and found a Colnago bike, quite a fine one indeed. He told him to paint it in vibrant Irish hues. Upon arrival, it was the most garish – an explosion of greens and shamrocks. He reassured me, ‘You’re going to love that bike, mate. Don’t fret about it.’
It seemed that a change of scenery and a bike ride through Santa Monica was exactly what O’Brien required at that time. He expressed his gratitude numerous times, stating, “I thanked him countless times. I simply couldn’t comprehend that he was considering me.
Among William’s closest friends was Idle, who shared with O’Brien that such a thoughtful act was “quintessential” of Williams. Idle further explained, “He always put in a great deal of effort to lift your spirits.” He continued, “That’s just what Robin was like – so typically kind and generous. And his wit was unmatched, which made for an unusual blend.
I learned the art of generosity towards fans from Williams, as the comedian from Monty Python confessed. Initially, I would respond rudely to my fans, but they would laugh and leave. This became a pattern for me. However, observing Robin’s empathy made me realize that these interactions are significant moments in their lives. If I were unkind or dismissive, it would create an unpleasant memory. So, I decided to be generous instead.
