Robert Pattinson to Finally Awake from Cryogenic Sleep As Mickey 17

As a space-exploring, clone-surviving movie enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of reboots and remakes, I can confidently say that Robert Pattinson‘s latest sci-fi adventure, “Mickey 17,” is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the genre. The trailer offers a glimpse into a death cycle that has me questioning the meaning of life (and death) for our protagonist, Mickey.

The latest space sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson was about a prisoner serving his sentence on a spaceship heading towards a black hole due to various human rights violations and severe sexual misconduct. His upcoming space drama is titled “Mickey 17,” a collaboration with Bong Joon Ho, based on the novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton. This film follows an employee who’s only interested in the paycheck for his mission to colonize an ice world, where he’s repeatedly cloned because of the dangerous nature of the task. Each clone dies multiple times, and the number 7 signifies how many times this particular clone has died. Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning director of “Parasite,” confirmed the title change at CinemaCon, stating that he had killed the character 10 more times than originally planned. As the release date nears, a new trailer has been released, giving us a sneak peek into Pattinson’s repeated death cycle and introducing other cast members.

Mickey admits that he desired to leave Earth, but failed to thoroughly review the paperwork, not realizing he was signing up to be “Expendable,” meaning his body would be replaced after each fatal mission. This seems plausible given what appears to be a cryogenic freezer in a high-tech MRI machine in a long, empty room, similar to the one we saw last year during the first look. Mickey expresses his dislike for dying even on his 17th time, but surprisingly, an additional clone manages to survive. “Why are you still alive?” Robert Pattinson shouts at himself. Given Bong’s past films, it seems that Mickey 17 is likely to be another thought-provoking social thriller.

Why Pattinson?

Bong stated that Pattinson was a fitting choice for the role because “he possesses an unusual intensity in his gaze,” further expressing confidence in the actor’s ability to portray the character’s diverse aspects. Conversely, Pattinson, referring to Bong as his idol, mentioned that he was informed the part was “unattainable” when initially receiving the script, which piqued his interest.

Who else is in the cast?

In addition to Mickey 17, the cast includes Steven Yeun known for his role in Minari, Naomi Ackie from I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Toni Collette famed for her work in Hereditary, and Mark Ruffalo, recognized as the Hulk.

When’s it coming out (and why did it take so long?)

After numerous delays due to Hollywood strikes and production changes, the long-awaited press tour for this Warner Bros. film has been scheduled at last. Initially slated for release on March 29, 2024, the movie required additional time for completion. As announced by Variety, it now has a new release date: January 31, 2025. Here’s hoping the film will be ready to premiere as planned.
