Robert Pattinson should be the DCU’s Batman and this is why

Following Batman and (presumably) Superman, it seems quite fitting that Robert Pattinson and David Corenswet could embody exceptional portrayals of their respective characters. Given their impressive performances, isn’t it only logical for them to join forces in the DC Universe?

In Robert Pattinson’s Batman universe created by Gunn, there exists a unique, gritty corner that separates it from the central storyline of the DC Universe. The Batman, The Penguin, and other Gotham-based projects are considered Elseworlds tales – essentially, they don’t follow the primary narrative sequence like how X-Men ’97 doesn’t fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.

Initially, it appeared that Gunn and Peter Safran made a shrewd decision by maintaining a well-regarded and cherished part of the DC universe on the big screen. This allows them to construct a revamped cinematic empire with a fresh Man of Steel and a new Batman simultaneously. In simpler terms, they chose to keep an admired segment of DC movies while creating a rebooted version of both Superman and Batman.

Instead of continuing with uncertainty regarding the Batman role in the DC Universe, given that Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav previously stated “There’s not going to be four Batmans,” it seems fitting and timely to officially designate Robert Pattinson as the DCU’s Batman.

The DCU needs Robert Pattinson’s Batman

Gunn introduced the initial “Gods and Monsters” era of the DC Universe with The Brave and the Bold, a film helmed by Andy Muschietti, which was set to debut the fresh take on Batman for the franchise. Moreover, he made it clear that Robert Pattinson’s and Matt Reeves’ version of Batman would persist independently from the DC Universe.

Additionally, there have been rumors suggesting that Gunn might choose Pattinson as his next Batman, but this isn’t something he has in mind. He clarified this point earlier this year.

To put it simply, there hasn’t been much, if any good news regarding The Brave and the Bold. Last December, it was rumored to have been delayed, and since then, Gunn has been mostly silent on its progress.

Noticeably, advancements in The Batman 2 project have been quite sluggish. Rumors hint that Reeves might have been grappling with personal matters, which is understandable. Yet, it’s hard not to correlate the sequel’s numerous postponements with DCU’s hesitance regarding Batman.

Critics might contend that The Batman’s (specifically The Penguin’s) universe doesn’t fit well within the DC Universe. Given that we’ve primarily been exposed to Metropolis (and Pokolistan from Creature Commandos), their observation is valid; Metropolis is dark, gritty, and starkly distinct in tone compared to the DCU which is bright, vibrant, filled with extraterrestrials, and characters endowed with extraordinary abilities.

However, isn’t that exactly why we combine characters like Batman and Superman? They represent day and night, divine and human, two realms compelled to intersect for the common good. Their contrasts aren’t obstacles, but rather elements that would make a crossover more intriguing. Picture this: Corenswet bringing humor as the hopeful Man of Steel amidst Gotham’s constant rainfall, and Pattinson’s gritty hero soaring in the sun-baked skies of an unknown city.

Matt Reeves’ verdict on Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU

Additionally, it appears that Reeves isn’t entirely against the concept. He expressed this during an interview with MTV News by saying, “Ultimately, it boils down to if it seems reasonable.

What’s exciting is we have a story we’ve titled ‘The Epic Crime Saga,’ which forms the central focus of our work. It’s significant for me to bring this narrative to life.

I can’t predict what the future holds at this moment. My focus is solely on preparing for The Batman: Part II filming, aiming to create something extraordinary – that’s my main priority.

Currently, The Batman 2 is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. As for The Brave and the Bold, no release date has been announced yet. Contrary to some reports, the DC Universe has not officially confirmed Brandon Sklenar or Alan Ritchson as the new Batman.

In simpler terms, it’s not wise. After all, DC has work to do to regain the trust of moviegoers, and introducing two Batmans at once might not be a smart move when they want viewers to commit to a new shared universe. Introducing Pattinson into the DCU could be the better choice, even if it wasn’t Gunn’s original plan.

It seems we’ve found our ideal Dark Knight already, yet it’s premature to decide if the DC Universe is worthy of him. However, in this moment, he’s exactly the hero that the DCU requires.
