As a seasoned cinephile who has weathered countless release date changes and production delays, I must admit that I find myself both exasperated and intrigued by the latest shuffling of “Mickey 17.” On one hand, it’s disheartening to see yet another anticipated film pushed back further into the future. On the other, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when it comes to Bong Joon Ho’s work – after all, he’s proven time and again that patience is rewarded with cinematic gold.

Fans eagerly anticipating a new project from director Bong Joon Ho will have to hold on for a while longer, as Warner Bros. has moved the scheduled release of the sci-fi film “Mickey 17,” featuring Robert Pattinson, to April 18, 2025. This new date is three months later than the previously announced January 31, 2025 release.

The rescheduled date offers an opportunity for the movie to be shown in IMAX format during the Easter holiday season, with the hope of attracting a large audience. Originally scheduled for April 18, the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” directed by Antoine Fuqua, was moved to October 3 by Lionsgate. This shift led Warner Bros. to adjust their plans accordingly.

As soon as the April 18 slot opened up, we promptly booked it for ‘Mickey 17’. We’re really excited about this new release date, and can’t wait for the audience to watch it in IMAX.” (Warner Bros. spokesperson)

The film “Companion,” produced by Warner Bros. and New Line, will take over the empty “Mickey 17” slot in January, which was previously scheduled for January 10th. Now that January 31st is open with a complete IMAX setup, we’re thrilled to announce that “Companion” will be released on this new date instead.

Previously scheduled for March 29, 2024, “Mickey 17” has been postponed before. Recent reports from EbMaster suggest that the initial delay to 2025 occurred so that the project could be fully completed. The delays were due to last year’s strikes and other production adjustments.

According to studio reports, the shift in release date from April to an earlier time was a sign of faith in Director Bong, inspired by the favorable reactions to the movie’s initial trailer that was unveiled in September.

In the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the main character Mickey Barnes, who is an expendable employee, is the focus of the sci-fi thriller. Mickey is tasked with perilous missions to colonize a frigid planet. When one version of Mickey meets its end, another identical one is produced to take his place, keeping most of his memories intact. The film also features Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo in key roles.
