Robert Englund Rules Out Playing Freddy Krueger Again

As a lifelong fan of horror movies, I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy hearing Robert Englund rule out another turn as Freddy Krueger. His portrayal of the terrifying dream demon has been an integral part of my Halloween nights since I was a kid, and his presence will be sorely missed in any future Nightmare on Elm Street reboots.

It’s well-known that Robert Englund, who famously played Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street and its sequels, has mentioned wanting to move away from that iconic role. Yet, in 2018, he agreed to reprise the character for a guest spot on The Goldbergs. However, Englund has now made it clear that this will be his final appearance as Freddy Krueger.

As I shared during my latest chat with Bloody Disgustant, I find myself unable to bring Freddy Krueger back to life anymore. The truth is, I’ve grown too old for the role. The essence of Freddy, that terrifying spirit, seems to have vanished within me now.

Englund mentioned that he’s no longer able to perform fight scenes or rapid movements while wearing the Freddy Krueger costume. Although he opted out of the 2010 remake, he showed interest in appearing in future Nightmare on Elm Street reboots. He seemed especially eager about making a cameo in a potential remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Englund expressed his enthusiasm for being included if Part 3 of Dream Warriors is re-made, which he considers the most well-liked film in the series. He mentioned that it would be enjoyable for him to portray one of the doctors in the remake. He also recalled Priscilla Pointer, who played Amy Irving’s mother in the original film, and suggested the idea of playing her role as a male doctor with a cynical attitude towards the dream demon. This, he said, would be a nod to the audience, implying that he doesn’t believe in the existence of this common dream demon. Englund added that such cameos are common in remakes, particularly in horror genres, and thought it would add an interesting twist to the storyline.

Englund has left the door open for reprising his role as Freddy Krueger, specifically if the character appears in an animated format. However, currently, there are no plans for reboots or cartoons within this franchise. For now, fans can only delight in the newly restored version of A Nightmare on Elm Street, available digitally. The physical 4K Ultra HD release is scheduled for October 15.
