Robert Downey Jr.’s latest tease could hint at Iron Man’s Avengers return

The Thanksgiving post features a cartoon drawing of two people snapping a wishbone – a custom meant to bring good luck. The image only shows their shoulders and hands. This comes as fans are increasingly discussing whether Robert Downey Jr. will play multiple roles in the next Marvel movie.

Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, and fans are already speculating this could lead to a return of his character, Iron Man. Social media is filled with excitement, with many users predicting he’ll reprise the role of Tony Stark in the Secret Wars film.

Robert Downey Jr. has hinted at playing Doctor Doom before. Back in May, he shared a photo of the DOOM #1 comic book (2024) and items he called “Doom workstation essentials.” He’s continued the theme with posts for holidays – a Doctor Doom mask filled with chocolates for Valentine’s Day, and a picture of his wife, Susan Downey, as Sue Storm with her mother knitting a Doctor Doom costume for Mother’s Day.

The next Avengers movie, currently titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ is set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will hit theaters on December 18, 2026. The film will feature returning stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth, alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Collider reports that the first trailer is expected to be revealed on December 19, 2025, before screenings of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m honestly impressed by how secretive they’ve been with this new project. There haven’t been any big set photos or trailers leaked yet, which is pretty rare these days! They’re really keeping everything under lock and key.
