Robert Downey Jr. Returns To The MCU In Avengers: Doomsday, But Not How You Think

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I couldn’t help but be both thrilled and skeptical when Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU was announced at this year’s Comic-Con. The news that he would be taking on the role of Victor von Doom, one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, had me torn between excitement for the potential coolness of this moment and the fear that it might be a silly misstep.

Robert Downey Jr. is rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but this time, he won’t be portraying Iron Man. Instead, he’ll assume the role of a notorious Marvel antagonist, Victor von Doom. Downey initiated the MCU in 2008 with “Iron Man,” and concluded his tenure as Tony Stark in “Avengers: Endgame” (2018). This upcoming appearance might be an intriguing development or a questionable choice for the MCU.

At Hall H, Downey unveiled his latest character disguise, wearing a Dr. Doom mask before removing it, shocking the crowd. He declared casually, “A new mask, but my duties remain the same.”

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo will once again take the helm as directors for two upcoming Avengers films. The first one, titled “Avengers: Doomsday,” is scheduled for release in 2026. The second film, named “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is planned to follow in 2027. In these movies, Victor von Doom will assume the role of the main adversary.

In his latest interviews, Downey expressed eagerness to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stating, “It’s an essential piece of who I am.” He further added, “That character called out to me. And let me tell you, never underestimate Kevin Feige. He’s got this under control, and he always comes out on top. He’s the mastermind behind it all.”

As a dedicated fan, I can tell you that Victor von Doom has been a formidable adversary for Marvel’s pioneering superhero family, the Fantastic Four, for quite some time. Thus, his appearance in the narrative following the release of “Fantastic Four: The First Steps” feels perfectly timed.

Despite the scant information provided beyond the title and director, we’re eagerly anticipating and intrigued to discover how Marvel Studios will effectively integrate Robert Downey Jr.’s return as a completely new character into their universe.

As a longtime comic book fan and someone who has grown up with these iconic superhero stories, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming release of Fantastic Four: The First Steps in theaters next July. It brings back memories of my childhood, curled up with comics and imagining the adventures of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.
