Following a brief time in movie theaters, the action thriller starring Robert De Niro is now heading to a streaming service later this month.
I’m really excited that Tin Soldier is becoming available on January 22nd! I first saw it in theaters last September, and it’s a gripping story about Nash Cavanaugh, a former soldier. He gets pulled back into a dangerous mission by Emmanuel Ashburn, a high-ranking military officer, to go undercover and investigate a really unsettling cult led by a persuasive figure known only as “The Bokushi.”
The film stars Scott Eastwood as Nash and Robert De Niro as Ashburn, alongside well-known actors like John Leguizamo (from John Wick), Nora Arnezeder (Army of the Dead), and singer Rita Ora.
Even though Tin Soldier now has a home on Disney+, the movie was originally very poorly received by both audiences and critics. With a dismal 10% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8% rating from critics, the Brad Furman-directed film (he also directed The Lincoln Lawyer) was criticized for its confusing plot, convoluted storyline, and underutilization of its talented cast.
The film Tin Soldier also struggled to attract audiences. According to Box Office Mojo, it only made $89,572 in theaters, although it’s uncertain if that total includes its brief release in the U.S.
Scott Eastwood Was Once Very Optimistic About Tin Soldier
Although the movie Tin Soldier didn’t quite succeed, actor Clint Eastwood, before the film’s release last fall, shared what initially attracted him to the project. He said he found the basic idea behind Tin Soldier to be “quite interesting” when he first read the script.
Clint Eastwood described first reading the script as unique, envisioning a scenario similar to a cult forming, but populated by former military personnel. He found the idea compelling, especially the premise of a man who escaped the group being asked by the government to help dismantle it. The story was further complicated by the potential that his missing wife might still be alive, drawing him back into the situation.
Honestly, the idea for the movie was cool, but what really got me excited was the chance to work with Jamie Foxx and Robert De Niro. I mean, those two are legends! It was a total no-brainer, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
You can currently rent the movie Tin Soldier on YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. It will also be available to stream on Hulu beginning January 22nd.
