Robert de Niro to Receive Cannes Film Festival’s Honorary Palme d’Or

At the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May 13, Robert De Niro will be honored with the Palme d’Or award in a special tribute, which will occur during the festival’s opening ceremony.

The next day, Robert De Niro will deliver a workshop on stage at the Debussy Theater.

Robert De Niro expresses such a deep affection for the upcoming Lifetime Achievement Tribute at the Festival de Cannes: ‘Cannes has this unique ability to unite us all – storytellers, filmmakers, spectators, companions. In these times when the world seems to be pulling apart, Cannes serves as a reunion, a homecoming.'”

‘At a time when the world seems to be drifting apart, Cannes brings us back together – it’s like coming home for storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends.’

A well-known movie star has maintained a significant connection with the Cannes Film Festival over many years. Recently, he graced the red carpet for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Previously, he even served as the jury head there 14 years prior.

De Niro walks in the paths trodden by other recipients of the Palme d’Or, including Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, and several more notable figures.

Previously declared, renowned French actress Juliette Binoche is set to take over from Greta Gerwig as this year’s festival jury leader. This will be the second instance in Cannes Festival history where the jury will have a female president for two years in a row.

During an interview with EbMaster on Friday, Thierry Fremaux, head of Cannes, stated that he and his team were left with approximately 50 films to screen in order to finalize the Official Selection, which will be revealed (in part) on Thursday, April 10th, in Paris. The lineup is anticipated to feature a significant number of American filmmakers, such as Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Kelly Reichardt, Ari Aster, Kristen Stewart, and Wes Anderson.
