Robbie Robertson Tribute Concert at L.A.’s Forum to Feature Noah Kahan, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Eric Church, Van Morrison and More

As a seasoned music journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve had the privilege of attending and reviewing countless concerts and tribute shows throughout my career. The upcoming “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” at the Kia Forum is one that I’m particularly excited about.

Notable figures from the rock genre, along with others, will honor Robbie Robertson by performing a tribute concert at the Kia Forum in the Los Angeles area on October 17. The esteemed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who has been a friend and collaborator of Robertson’s for a long time, is one of the event producers.

The lineup for “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Tribute to Robbie Robertson” features musicians who were contemporaries of Robertson during the Band’s active years in the ’60s. This group includes Bobby Weir, Taj Mahal, Eric Clapton (who also appeared with Robertson in the 1986 Martin Scorsese concert film “The Last Waltz”), Van Morrison, and Mavis Staples.

As a passionate cinephile, I’d say that this film not only showcases some veteran music stars who have graced our airwaves for decades, but also introduces us to fresh talent that has emerged in the last 15 years or so. Artists like Eric Church, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, and most recently, Noah Kahan, whose songs have been dominating the Billboard album chart’s top 10.

I’d say, “I must admit, the majority of this roster is made up of seasoned musicians who emerged during the time following Robertson and were significantly impacted by The Band. Notable names on the list are Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Trey Anastasio, Daniel Lanois, Jim James, Warren Haynes, Bruce Hornsby, Don Was, Robert Randolph, Ryan Bingham, and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from The Heartbreakers.”

Starting this Friday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, you can purchase tickets from Ticketmaster. However, if you have a Citi credit card, you’ll get early access during the presale which runs from Tuesday to Thursday of the current week.

Blackbird Presents, known for creating popular tribute shows in recent times, is overseeing the production of this show. They are collaborating with Live Nation on its promotion as well. Notably, these two entities are currently joining forces for the Outlaw Music Festival tour led by Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. Last year, they organized Nelson’s birthday tribute shows at the Hollywood Bowl, which were recorded for a theatrical and streaming debut.

Martin Scorsese’s collaboration with Robertson goes way back, starting from when he directed “The Last Waltz,” the concert film of The Band in 1976. Later, he brought him on board as a composer or music supervisor for various projects like “The King of Comedy” and even the recent release “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Joining Scorsese as executive producers are Jared Levine, Keith Wortman, and Scooter Weintraub.

80-year-old Robertson passed away on August 9, 2023, having finished working on “Killers of the Flower Moon”. Although the movie wasn’t released yet, his exceptional work in composing the score earned him posthumous nominations for Best Original Score from the Oscars, Golden Globes, and BAFTA.

At the concert, you can expect Robertson to perform songs from his solo catalog, which dates back to 1987. Additionally, there will be tunes featured from the Band’s discography, spanning from their debut album “Music From Big Pink” in 1968 up until “Islands” in 1977. (The other Band members continued performing together without him in the 1990s.)

anticipated songs from the Robertson tribute in the Forum could be renditions of “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Ophelia” and “The Shape I’m In.” These are well-known compositions by Robertson.
