Rob McElhenney Is Now Rob Mac, Apparently

Rob McElhenney, known for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” is officially transitioning to Rob Mac. The actor submitted paperwork to legally change his name in June and will be recognized as Rob Mac moving forward, according to Entertainment Weekly. Despite having been credited as Rob McElhenney since his debut on “Law & Order” in 1997, the 48-year-old has decided to adopt a moniker that sounds like an order at McDonald’s if he so chooses.

In a video shared on social media on July 1st, McElhenney/Mac expressed his reasoning behind the name change, stating that it aims to reduce confusion about the correct pronunciation and spelling of “McElhenney”, while acknowledging that it might come off as somewhat arrogant. He mentioned that a significant portion of his time has been wasted due to people mispronouncing or misspelling his name, costing him valuable days of his life. Furthermore, he pointed out that many generations have altered the spelling and the current one was simply bestowed upon his ancestor by an official with authority over naming conventions. He also mentioned that most people already refer to him as “Rob Mac” in everyday conversation. Interestingly enough, while many recognize him as “that guy from It’s Always Sunny”, his character on the show shares the name Mac (originally “Fat Mac”). The new season of It’s Always Sunny premieres on July 9th, leading some to speculate that this name change might be a promotional strategy for the show. However, it seems unlikely given the timing and context of his explanation.

McElhenney, also known as Rob, initially announced his name change in May, explaining that it was due to his growing international business ventures with More Better Industries. This company recently acquired soccer teams in Mexico and Colombia, leading to a need for a more globally accessible name. He told Variety, “With our business and storytelling expanding into various regions and languages where my name is challenging to pronounce, I’m now going by Rob Mac.” His wife and It’s Always Sunny co-star, Kaitlin Olson, shared that the family was not particularly excited: “The kids aren’t too keen on it because they share the last name,” she said. “And legally, so do I!” However, business interests in Colombia seem to have their priorities.
