Yesterday, RoadCraft experienced a rough debut. It seems that Saber Interactive failed to address the problems that were present in the beta testing and Steam Next Fest demonstration, as post-launch feedback is divided. Although the game’s Steam rating is gradually improving, it’s challenging not to feel that despite its immense potential and dedicated player base, it still falls short of delivering an exceptional experience.
More construction, less simulation
The responses from the beta testing and demonstration of RoadCraft were quite evident. Many players highly appreciated the terrain reshaping and construction tasks, which seemed to be particularly engaging. The cooperative mode, striking visuals, and realistic machinery sounds also received a lot of positive feedback.
However, the driving mechanics weren’t as complex as in games like SnowRunner, lacking manual gearboxes, fuel management, and vehicle damage, giving it a more arcade-style feel. Additionally, some technical issues were noted. The developers acknowledged these points and assured they are addressing them before the official release to improve the overall experience.
Yesterday, when RoadCraft debuted, approximately 60% of the Steam reviews were not favorable. However, it’s gradually improving, but it appears that many players anticipated something similar to SnowRunner. Yet, RoadCraft chose a distinct path. Much like what transpired with Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, which shifted focus from large cargo hauls towards exploration and scientific missions instead.
RoadCraft moves away from intense off-road driving and hardcore vehicle simulation, instead emphasizing construction and sculpting the landscape. You won’t find manual shifting or fuel management here, which gives the driving experience a more relaxed feel. This lighter approach has led to divided opinions about the game, but many reviews on OpenCritic are positive, with Gamepressure awarding it a score of 7.5 out of 10.
Here’s what players are saying:
Initially, I had high expectations for the game to be an upgraded version of Snowrunner, offering terrain customization as an enticing novelty. However, what I’ve found is that it resembles a simpler version of Expeditions, focusing on terrain editing.
– Sinate
Instead of SnowRunner/MudRunner, it’s closer to a directed Construction Simulator. Filling sand is disappointing, and the simplified transportation routes diminish the gaming experience by reducing enjoyment. Furthermore, due to the lack of damage, it becomes excessively simple.
– Mlem
This game isn’t similar to Snowrunner or Expeditions; instead, it has a unique identity all its own. In this game, you have the freedom to construct roads and fell trees – a feature I find incredibly enjoyable. Moreover, it performs exceptionally well on 2K ultra-wide screens when run at maximum settings.
– rammer
From a gaming standpoint, I appreciate the shift in tempo, and the novelty of exploring new approaches. Instead of the usual task of transporting item x to location y, we’re really stretching our creative muscles this time around.
It’s quite logical that the game designers decided to exclude the handling of fuel, as it could be monotonous and time-consuming for many players, potentially distracting them from the primary objectives and enjoyment of the game itself.
– Navarone
As a dedicated fan, it’s clear that we all share the same concern: the glitches continue to pose a significant challenge. The game has been crashing unexpectedly for many of us, some are encountering audio issues, and there have even been instances where strange lines of code unexpectedly appeared on the screen. To add to this, quite a few players are finding it tough to perform basic tasks like locating and retrieving the generator, largely due to controls that aren’t as intuitive as we would hope.
Perhaps once the issues are fully resolved and people understand that RoadCraft isn’t merely SnowRunner with alternate machinery, it may begin to receive the recognition it deserves. While Expeditions: A MudRunner Game didn’t quite hit the mark, RoadCraft feels unique. It presents a fresh approach compared to the traditional Spintires series.
