Okay, so remember that remake everyone was arguing about when it came out earlier this year? The one based on that totally classic 80s action movie? Well, it’s finally hitting free streaming after being a Prime Video exclusive. It definitely split audiences – people really had strong opinions – but despite all the debate, it actually did incredibly well on the platform. I’m curious to see if a wider audience will change the conversation now that it’s more accessible.
Doug Liman directed this film, even though Amazon decided against a traditional wide release in theaters. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter who finds work as a bouncer at a tough bar in the Florida Keys. The film also features Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Jessica Williams, JD Pardo, Austin Post, and Joaquim de Almeida.
The remake of Road House is coming to Tubi for free streaming on March 21, 2026, two years after it first launched on Prime Video. If you’ve been thinking about watching it but haven’t yet, now you’ll have a free way to enjoy this updated version of the classic 1989 film.
Was ‘Road House’ Really That Bad?
The new Road House remake has received mixed reviews, with critics giving it a 59% rating and audiences a 52%. Many viewers feel it doesn’t live up to the charm of the original film starring Patrick Swayze. The original was known for being delightfully over-the-top and a little silly, but it also had genuine heart. It delivered exciting fight scenes, well-timed humor, and overall, was simply an enjoyable movie experience.
The 2024 remake received negative reviews, largely because its action scenes relied heavily on CGI, making them feel more like a video game than a realistic movie. Critics also felt Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as Dalton lacked the depth and complexity of Patrick Swayze’s original portrayal, which balanced toughness with a thoughtful, philosophical side.
Despite the changes, the new Road House isn’t a bad movie – it’s simply a different take on the original. If you haven’t seen the first film, you likely won’t notice the differences. On its own, it’s a solid action thriller, though it can feel a bit formulaic. Ewan McGregor’s performance as Knox definitely adds a wild, energetic element. Even though opinions on Road House were divided, it became a huge success for Prime Video. Over 50 million people around the world watched it in its first two weekends, making it the biggest film debut for the studio globally. Because of this popularity, a sequel is now being planned.
Details about the story of Road House 2 are still scarce, but Jake Gyllenhaal will be back as Dalton for more action-packed fight scenes. Originally, Guy Ritchie was set to direct, but he’s no longer involved. Ilya Naishuller, known for Nobody and Heads of State, is now directing the film.
The cast of Road House 2 includes well-known actors like Dave Bautista and Aldis Hodge, along with a number of professional fighters, such as Rico Verhoeven, Michael Chandler, Michael Page, Dustin Poirier, Stephen Thompson, and Tyron Woodley.
