Ripple Donates $100K in XRP for California Wildfire Relief Efforts

Ripple is taking action by contributing $100,000 in their own XRP cryptocurrency, to help those affected by the California wildfire disaster.

Your donation, channeled via The Giving Block, assists frontline aid initiatives undertaken by charitable organizations such as World Central Kitchen (WCK) and GiveDirectly in their relief work.

Crypto Community Joins the Fight Against Wildfires

In a social media update on January 14th, Ripple declared that Jared Isaacman, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for NASA leader, would be making a matching contribution to the same cause.

Through his company Shift4, Isaacman has partnered with The Giving Block to initiate a fundraising campaign aimed at gathering $2 million for wildfire relief. This platform specializes in cryptocurrency-driven philanthropy. As of January 13th, the campaign had amassed more than $25,000 from around 100 different crypto donations.

1) Ripple has become the primary corporate backer for this initiative, making a donation shortly after teaming up with MoonPay to contribute another $50,000 to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. This charitable organization helps equip and resource Los Angeles firefighters beyond what’s provided by the city’s budget.

Following XRP’s rise to become the top-performing cryptocurrency among the top 50 by market capitalization, a donation has been made. At present, the token is valued at approximately $2.86, which is just 15.5% shy of its peak price of $3.40, reached in January 2018.

A Crisis of Unprecedented Scale

In simpler terms, severe wildfires ignited by intense drought and strong Santa Ana winds are causing significant problems in California. These fires, which began in early January, have led to the displacement of many tens of thousands of people as they keep causing destruction.

Sadly, it appears that at least 24 individuals have perished, and numerous homes have been devastated based on the latest reports.

Fires have broken out in the Palisades, Eaton, Sylmar, and Ventura districts of Los Angeles, scorching approximately 40,000 acres and causing extensive damage.

Despite the Hurst fire being mostly under control, the Palisades blaze continues to rage on, with specialists predicting economic damages surpassing $50 billion.

The cryptocurrency community has a tradition of uniting in times of disaster to aid victims. For instance, in 2023, they collected funds for those affected by the Maui fires, with Ripple donating $100,000. A year on, they contributed more money towards helping people impacted by hurricanes Helene and Milton. During this event, it’s said that Isaacman doubled the first $475,000 raised.
