Although Riot Games continues to develop an MMO, enthusiasts who are anxiously looking forward to this project should not expect its release anytime soon. A recent update from one of the studio’s co-founders suggests that the project is still a significant distance away.
About five years past, Riot initially revealed their grand strategy to dominate various significant genres within the gaming world. This included everything from a Trading Card Game (TCG) to a fighting game, and yes, even an MMO. The League of Legends creator left no stone unturned in displaying their ambitious blueprint.
Since that time, while certain projects have received names such as the combat game known as 2XKO, others have remained completely out of the limelight. One of these is the enigmatic MMO project, as Riot has been very secretive in the years following and even with key personnel leaving the team.
Currently, the co-founder of the studio, Marc Merrill, has finally spoken up about the project, but it’s unfortunate for those eagerly anticipating the game that the news isn’t positive. In fact, there’s speculation that humans might set foot on Mars before they get to experience Riot’s MMO.

Riot Games’ highly-anticipated MMO is still lightyears away
Since the 2020 announcement, Riot’s MMO has been simmering quietly behind the scenes. On the other hand, games such as Valorant, TFT, and League of Legends have continued to be in the limelight, capturing attention.
Four years after its initial unveiling, Merrill recently disclosed on X (previously known as Twitter) that their MMO had encountered significant challenges and essentially required a “reboot.” Consequently, he informed the community that the development team would be taking an extended hiatus – possibly for several years. This choice wasn’t made lightly, but it was crucial.

For the first time in a while, Merrill had a chat with Stephen Totilo from Game File. He expressed that the MMO project remains his top priority, emphasizing his excitement and commitment to bringing this project to market for the fans.
For a considerable period, we’ve been pouring resources into our endeavors,” he emphasized, “essentially expanding and enriching the world of Runeterra. Our goal is to facilitate exploration for everyone, ensuring their experiences are valuable and significant to them.
Additionally, Merrill mentioned that although these remarks indicate continuous backing from Riot, it seems the MMO might still take a while before completion.
“As for when? “Hopefully before we go to Mars,” Merrill joked.
It seems clear this is a casual observation, but it appears Riot’s MMO isn’t ready yet for the public. If true, we might be waiting another ten years or so. So here’s an intriguing question: Which event will happen first – humans setting foot on Mars or the release of an MMO that may drain productivity like no other? We can only guess and wait.
