Rihanna Made a Banger for Smurfs

Great and not-so-great news! Rihanna has dropped a new dance track that we can all enjoy (hurray!), but it was produced to promote the Smurfs movie she’s starring in this summer, so her long-awaited album R9 remains elusive (aww). “Friend of Mine,” Rihanna’s first lead single for a dance song in eight years, was released on May 16. This track, reminiscent of her hits like “We Found Love,” features electronic beats, minimal lyrics from Rihanna, and is intended for dancing with strangers. In the song, Rihanna sings, “Ooh, it feels like déjà vu.” “I’ve just met you tonight, but you feel like a friend of mine.” It seems the Smurfs are ready to party! Are they dancing with other Smurfs on the dance floor? Even Papa Smurf gets his groove on? This release marks Rihanna’s first since her two ballads from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack in 2022, “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m recounting my recent encounter with Rihanna’s music video. In it, I find myself strolling through an artificial flower garden, accompanied by a grand blossom, until reaching a door. With a swift kick, she transfers the remainder of the video to our beloved Smurfs, specifically her character, Smurfette. The Smurfs proceeded to dance, even incorporating a touch of voguing, before venturing through an array of trippy environments – from an aurora-lit sky, to a river adorned with water turbines, and concluding at a neon rainbow-backed screen. The video then returned to Rihanna, who graced us with one final strut. It’s always a delight to have her back, belting out tunes that could easily provide the soundtrack for a dancefloor rendezvous reminiscent of her earlier days. Apologies to the little ones.
