In recent times, the esteemed filmmaker and producer, Ridley Scott, who’s renowned for his work on series such as Alien, Gladiator, and Blade Runner, has faced significant criticism. Films like House of Gucci and Napoleon have sparked disagreement among both critics and viewers, but it wasn’t until the release of Gladiator II last year that one of Scott’s recent films managed to perform well at the box office. Despite this scrutiny, the 87-year-old iconic figure in Hollywood continues to work relentlessly, and has recently hinted at a new, secret project which he claims is the best script he has ever encountered.
One of Scott’s top-notch and underappreciated films, “Kingdom of Heaven“, is commemorating its 20th anniversary. This film will be re-released in 4K resolution, and the director recently discussed this historical war epic with Collider. The discussion veered towards other significant topics, with Scott being queried about potential future projects. His response hints at his intentions for a secretive Western…
Although well-known director Scott has explored various film genres, there are some genres like Westerns that he hasn’t ventured into as of yet. Although elements of this genre have appeared in some of his movies, a traditional Western film is still missing from his portfolio. When hinting at his upcoming project, Scott suggested that it might be the most compelling Western script he has ever encountered.
Indeed, I’ve come across an exceptional Western novel, hands down my favorite one yet. It was hidden among the works of a deceased author from his estate. We managed to locate it and now I hold the script in my possession, eagerly anticipating the day when I can bring it to life on screen. However, there are still other projects brewing in my mind – a musical, a pirate movie, another Western. But for now, let’s focus on this magnificent Western tale.
Ridley Scott Has No Plans to Retire Any Time Soon
Scott chose not to disclose the project’s name as there might be other producers eagerly waiting to claim it. Moreover, he shared his plans to keep directing films as long as possible. He isn’t in a hurry to start his next project and feels that every story he intends to tell should have its perfect moment: “If they are strong enough, and you know it’s not yet the right time because everyone is apprehensive about it, you let them wait and then return.
Lately, we shared the update that Scott appears to have had enough with the Alien series. His extensive work as director and producer on the demanding horror-sci-fi movies might have taken a toll on him, but it doesn’t signal the end of his filmmaking journey. In reality, this prolific director is immersed in the production of his upcoming movie, an adaptation of Peter Heller’s apocalyptic sci-fi novel titled The Dog Stars. This production features Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong, and it’s slated for release in March 2026.
