The famous director isn’t impressed with recent Hollywood movies. He says he’s been rewatching his classic films, like *Blade Runner* and *Alien*, to avoid what he considers to be uninspired content.
Director Ridley Scott recently criticized the current state of filmmaking, stating that while millions of movies are made worldwide, most are of poor quality. Speaking at a BFI event in London, Scott explained that filmmakers often rely on digital effects to compensate for weak storylines, rather than starting with a strong script. He expressed concern about a surge in mediocre films, saying the industry is “drowning in mediocrity.” Interestingly, Scott also revealed he’s been focusing on creating simpler films that, he believes, are surprisingly good and won’t become dated.
Scott recently reflected on his 2001 war film, expressing surprise at having made it. He said he watched it recently and wondered how he pulled it off, but added that it’s a relief to see someone making a truly good movie every now and then.
Ridley Scott is one of the most commercially successful directors ever, with his films collectively earning over $5 billion worldwide. He’s also received major accolades, including two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and a lifetime achievement award from BAFTA. Scott began his directing career in 1977 with *The Duelists*, but gained international recognition with his 1979 film, *Alien*. Throughout his career, he’s demonstrated remarkable versatility, directing diverse films such as the historical epic *Gladiator* (2000) and the science fiction classic *Blade Runner*.
Scott’s latest film, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, is complete. The screenplay is by Mark L. Smith (known for *The Revenant*) and Christopher Wilkinson (*Ali*). Starring Jacob Elordi (*Euphoria*) and Margaret Qualley (*The Substance*), the movie takes place after a devastating flu pandemic has decimated the population. It’s scheduled for release in theaters on March 27, 2026.
Ridley Scott Teases Big Plans For Gladiator 3
Ridley Scott’s latest film, *Gladiator II*, came out in 2024 as a follow-up to his 2000 hit, *Gladiator*. The movie stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Mescal plays a Roman prince who is exiled, becomes a prisoner of war, and is forced to fight as a gladiator. It has already earned over $462 million around the world.
Now that *The Dog Stars* is finished, Scott is starting to plan the next film in the series. He says he has a good idea of the direction it will take, noting the character is still, in a sense, the Emperor of Rome. While Scott has begun writing the script, the project is currently in its early phases.
