As a seasoned cinephile who has been fortunate enough to witness the evolution of cinema, I must say the recent revelations about Denzel Washington’s same-sex kiss in “Gladiator II” have left me both amused and intrigued. The back-and-forth between Washington and director Ridley Scott is reminiscent of a classic cat-and-mouse game, albeit with a more elegant setting – the grandeur of Hollywood’s red carpet premieres.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the intriguing tale surrounding Denzel Washington’s rumored same-sex kiss in “Gladiator II.” Contrary to what Denzel suggested, implying that the powers that be lacked courage to include it, director Ridley Scott asserts that such a scene might never have been planned.
Scott firmly stated on Monday evening during the ‘Gladiator II’ premiere in Hollywood that it was not true,” Scott said later, explaining, “What they claimed happened never actually occurred. It was just a part of their performance.
In response, Washington stated that it was merely a friendly “peck” on the lips. He went on to say that the whole incident was blown out of proportion at the premiere, adding that they were making a big deal out of something small. According to him, he kissed the person’s hands, gave them a quick peck, and then moved on.
In a recent chat with Gaytey, Washington shared an interesting tidbit about his role in “Gladiator”. He mentioned, “I gave a man a kiss on screen, but that scene was removed. I believe they found it too surprising. I planted a full kiss on him and it seems they weren’t quite prepared for that moment just yet. I ended up killing the character around five minutes later.” He added humorously, “It was like a ‘kiss of death’ in the movie.
The “Gladiator II” screenplay indicates that the character played by Washington, Macrinus, has previously been involved in romantic relationships with males.
On Sunday evening at the Governors Awards held in Los Angeles, actress Connie Nielson (reprising her character Lucilla in the upcoming “Gladiator” sequel) expressed her views concerning the edited out same-sex kiss scene in Washington.
Nielson shared with me that their emotional struggle didn’t find its place in the movie, and they explained, ‘It’s not due to any form of prejudice. It’s simply because there wasn’t enough space for it.’
Michael Pruss, the producer, commented, “A lot of footage wasn’t included in the final cut of the movie. In truth, it was more like an ordinary occurrence.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share my excitement about Paul Mescal’s role in the upcoming Gladiator sequel. In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, he mentioned that this film is designed to captivate a wide range of viewers. In his own words, “I believe this movie will resonate with the men, the LGBTQ+ community, women, mothers, fathers, and even the ‘bros’. Yes, I’m confident that the guys will find it equally enthralling.
Nielsen praised Mescal during the Governors Awards, stating, “What a fantastic actor he is! It’s astounding what he’s achieved in such a short span. He’s extraordinarily talented, not just as an artist, but also as a person. His ability to handle this level of pressure at his young age is commendable and awe-inspiring. He’s truly a delightful individual.
The sequel to ‘Gladiator’, titled ‘Gladiator II’, will hit theaters on November 22, after its premiere tonight in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Don’t forget to follow EbMaster‘s social media platforms for live red carpet interviews starting approximately at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
