Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke Tease New Movie Together Set in the 19th Century: ‘I Want to Get It Financed’

Prior to unveiling their recent joint project “Blue Moon” at the Berlin Film Festival, filmmaker Richard Linklater and actor Ethan Hawke disclosed that they are developing their 10th film together.

Blue Moon” is the first film collaboration between Hawke and Linklater in more than a decade, since they worked together on “Boyhood” in 2014. Over the span of their careers, they have teamed up for nine films, which also include the “Before” trilogy, “The Newton Boys,” and “Fast Food Nation.

When EbMaster inquired if fans might have to endure another ten years before Linklater’s next film with Hawke, Linklater responded, “I sincerely hope not. We are currently developing a project, which is somewhat historical, set in the 19th century. I’d love for him to be involved. However, until it’s fully funded and ready to start production, I generally don’t discuss details too much as they can become disappointing.

The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker went on to say, “The process is already challenging enough… just to witness the creation of films. Every single one is a marvel. I can’t explain how movies are produced; it feels like each time I’m fortunate and this happens. It’s tough, but it doesn’t feel genuine until it becomes reality.”

The director who was nominated for an Oscar said that making a movie is already difficult, but seeing it come together is a miracle. He admitted he doesn’t understand the process of filmmaking, but each time he feels lucky when his movie gets made. It’s hard work, but it doesn’t feel real until it actually happens.

Hawke expressed his desire to reveal more, but confessed he was feeling apprehensive, stating: “I’m bursting at the seams to do so, but I’m constantly anxious. I want to secure funding. We’ve been developing something for a considerable period, and it appears as though it’s finally ripe. It feels like the world is now prepared for it, and we’re done with it.

The performer noted, “I’m not intentionally being secretive; I simply wish to avoid discussing it openly, as people might express doubts, and the project may never receive funding if that happens.

Earlier today, during a press conference at “Blue Moon” in Berlin, the two partners had a discussion on embracing risk in artistic endeavors. Uma Thurman, one of them, expressed her concern that financial considerations often overshadow innovative concepts.

He stated that when we always choose money over everything else, we end up with unoriginal items that are liked by the majority of people, and we’re led to believe this is the best. It’s a joint effort we all participate in. If you appreciate controversial art and want it, ask for it. Currently, people don’t think they can make a profit from it, so it isn’t produced.

The film “Blue Moon” centers around Lorenz Hart, an acclaimed American songwriter, who is battling alcoholism and depression on the premiere night of “Oklahoma!”, Richard Rodgers’ first musical collaboration with Hammerstein. In this movie, Ethan Hawke portrays Hart, while Andrew Scott assumes the role of Rodgers, Margaret Qualley takes on Elizabeth Weiland, and Bobby Cannavale plays a bartender named Eddie.

“Blue Moon” premieres at Berlin Film Festival on Tuesday night.
