Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy has received a horrible update.
Rian Johnson previously directed the 2017 Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, for Lucasfilm. Following that film’s release, Lucasfilm announced that Johnson would write and potentially direct a new series of Star Wars movies, starting with the first film.
Unfortunately, the project was never completed, and recent news suggests it won’t happen at all.
What is the update on Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy is unlikely to move forward. While Johnson still feels connected to the franchise and it influences his creative process, it appears the project has been abandoned.
In an interview with Rolling Stone last July, director Rian Johnson explained that his busy schedule with the Knives Out movies was the main reason he didn’t continue with the planned Star Wars trilogy. He mentioned he’d be willing to work with Lucasfilm again if the chance came up, but there haven’t been any updates about that possibility.
Rian Johnson had a positive experience working with Lucasfilm, and they expressed interest in future collaborations. He and Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy would often brainstorm ideas. However, after making ‘Knives Out,’ Johnson became very busy with other projects. While he’d be excited to return to the ‘Star Wars’ universe if the opportunity arose, he’s currently focused on and enjoying his own creative work.
The next Star Wars film, featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, will be in US cinemas on May 22, 2024. Meanwhile, the fourth Knives Out movie, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will first appear in some theaters on November 26, 2025, and then stream on Netflix starting December 12.
