Genshin Impact has significantly transformed the gaming scene for consoles. Previously, free-to-play games of the gacha style were primarily popular among mobile gamers. However, with its release on PS5 and PS4, these types of games have become lucrative ventures, as numerous top-tier gacha titles now follow this business model.
Wuthering Waves is the newest game set to debut on Sony’s platform, boasting an anime-style open world adventure that was previously released for PC and mobile devices last year. In numerous ways, it closely mirrors HoYoverse’s most popular title, with several of its components being duplicated directly from the original.
However, Teyvat appears somewhat worn out lately, but Kuro’s enhancements have been significant, particularly in key aspects such as its v2.0 storyline. This updated edition of the game coincides with the launch of this revitalized narrative.
In this game, you take on the role of Rover, who has lost their memory, and you can choose whether Rover is male or female. Unfortunately, the main storyline resembles some problematic Chinese gacha games, as it’s filled with confusing names and a complex lore that requires extensive knowledge to decipher its meaning.
Among all parts, the game’s writing stands out as the most problematic, despite its initial chapters being rather sluggish and dull. Once you’ve finished a few missions, you can jump straight to the fresh Rinascita setting, which draws inspiration from Italian architecture and the vibrant carnivals of South American nations.
As the narrative repeatedly grapples with familiar issues, the game’s design stands out in brilliance. Spanning a 15-hour adventure, you’ll engage in a daring heist, master dance moves within a theatrical troupe, and enjoy countless beautifully animated sequences. Regrettably, this entire journey is marred by the writers’ hesitation to employ an editor to tone down their excessive dialogue.
If you can look beyond its somewhat annoying dialogue, the gameplay in Genshin Impact is exceptional. The game has been gradually striving to modernize its outdated exploration with the new environment Natlan, but Wuthering Waves surpasses it significantly. Movement feels swift and smooth; climbing is quick and intuitive, and new movement options, such as flying and gondolas, make navigating the open world genuinely enjoyable.
Delving into this game really amps up the excitement as I find myself eagerly hunting down every hidden secret it offers and completing the numerous tasks at hand. Almost everything I accomplish within the game grants me in-game funds, which I can then use to try my luck with new characters – stay tuned for more on that!
The battle sequences are what truly shine in this game, making it feel more like a traditional action game featuring characters, rather than an odd blend of MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) elements. For instance, novice player Carlotta showcases old-school acrobatic gunplay with her chilling pistol that emits frost; on the other hand, Roccia has a ghostly jack-in-the-box ability, summoning storms and then striking the ground powerfully to deal significant damage.
In these games, working well together is crucial for winning. You’ll want to devote effort not just to developing your characters, but also choosing teammates who work effectively together. There are strategies to explore, but since the game primarily offers a solo experience with some multiplayer options, it’s largely on you to create the teams that you find enjoyable.
To access characters in this game, you’ll definitely have to interact with the gacha feature. It’s worth mentioning that Wuthering Waves offers more than some similar games do, since you’re assured weapons and you only need to make 80 attempts to get a five-star character.
While there’s always a chance you could get a promoted character from a banner by unlocking it, it’s important to note that it’s a 50-50 shot. Additionally, if you receive duplicate characters, they can be beneficial due to the buffs they provide. However, this setup may entice players to invest real money. Although you can earn a substantial amount of currency through gameplay alone, and never have to spend anything, remember that the system is structured to incentivize spending, so it’s worth being aware of that aspect.
In terms of value, the quality of what’s provided essentially for no cost is astonishingly good. The music score is fantastic all around, and certain aspects of the environment design, particularly in the newly added Rinascita region, are exceptionally impressive.
One important point to note is the character development feature reminiscent of Pokémon, where you gather Echoes from enemies encountered in the field and use them to enhance your abilities by boosting your statistics. These Echoes possess various random traits, and acquiring complete sets provides additional statistical benefits.
In other games like Honkai: Star Rail or Zenless Zone Zero, you might find relics or discs that enhance your character’s abilities. However, what sets your primary Echo apart is its unique attack that it brings to your arsenal. This makes obtaining powerful ones all the more exciting because of this added benefit. Plus, instead of repeatedly running combat gauntlets as in those games, you can enjoy farming them in an open world, making the experience much more enjoyable and less repetitive.
In essence, this latest update significantly expands the game by introducing numerous additional Echoes, thereby providing a multitude of chances to shape your character in unique ways. This key aspect is what truly makes the game appealing, ensuring you’ll continue to return even after completing quests and exhaustively exploring its expansive open world.
As a continuously running service, you’ll find an unending flow of content to challenge those builds. With frequent events, mini-games, and narrative developments, there’s always something engaging to participate in. Significant updates are rolled out every six weeks, making it a game meant for long-term enjoyment rather than quick playthroughs. By now, you should have a fair idea if this extended gaming experience suits your preference.
