As a cinephile who has traversed through the vast landscape of films, I must admit that “We Live in Time” left an indelible mark on my heart. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, two actors who have time and again proven their mettle in the world of cinema, deliver performances that are nothing short of mesmerizing. Their chemistry is akin to a well-crafted symphony, each note resonating with raw emotion and palpable intensity.
In the movie “We Live in Time,” Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh deliver captivating performances, making this romantic drama truly shine. The film is expertly directed by John Crowley, showcasing a style reminiscent of his critically acclaimed work on “Brooklyn” (2015), rather than his more modest effort in “The Goldfinch” (2019). Although it may lean slightly towards the melodramatic, the film effectively narrates a contemporary love story with a sincere classical feel.
In ‘We Live in Time,’ the narrative takes a back seat, but it’s the performances of Garfield and Pugh that truly drive the film. Despite familiar themes, their skillful acting makes us deeply invested in their characters. It’s safe to say that without these two, ‘We Live in Time’ might quickly join the ranks of forgotten movies like its genre counterparts.
In the opening of Crowley’s film, he sets the stage for the narrative ahead. We meet Almut (portrayed by Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), a loving couple whose journey we follow swiftly. Within just a few minutes, they experience falling in love, having a child, and receiving devastating news – Almut’s stage 3 ovarian cancer diagnosis. The movie then navigates between various stages of their relationship, sometimes without a clear pattern. This storytelling technique seems arbitrary yet effectively distracts us from the predictable elements of the plot.
The two characters, Almut and Tobias, are well-developed individuals. Almut, a skilled chef and proprietor of a restaurant, contrasts with Tobias, who works as an IT technician for the cereal company Weetabix. Each has unique qualities, idiosyncrasies, and vulnerabilities. Yet, their instant bond is palpable from their first encounter – an unusual one where Tobias gets hit by Almut’s car on the street. Post-recovery, Tobias pays a visit to Almut’s restaurant and they start dating. Over time, they decide to live together.
Moving forward in their life story, the pair opt to have a child, face difficulties in conceiving, and eventually welcome their precious daughter named Ella into their world. Later on, they find themselves confronted with difficult choices due to Almut’s cancer diagnosis. Throughout the movie, Little Fish masterfully depicts the delicate nuances and dramatic transformations in their relationship as Saoirse Ronan and Tobey Maguire skillfully portray their journey together.
Crowley’s choice to reveal his hand early is a bold one, but it does shortchange some of the drama. And when you peel back the nonlinear devices you find the makings of a pretty standard tearjerker. Yet the movie works because Crowley knows what he has in Garfield and Pugh. And Payne’s script provides plenty of serious-minded and grounded material for the actors to work with.
