Review bombing is players response to the investigation against dev of Schedule 1, the biggest hit on Steam in recent weeks

The probe concerning the creator of the Polish game series, Drug Dealer Simulator, didn’t garner any supporters for the Movie Games firm. Instead, both versions of the series were hit by negative reviews, orchestrated as ‘review bombing’, on Steam.

2024 saw DDS2 among the well-appreciated Polish games of that year. It marked a notable milestone for the studio in June, though it didn’t quite reach the pinnacle of being crowned “Game of the Year.

Initially, DDS2 was warmly received with a whopping 64% positive rating on Steam. But it seems that fondness has waned somewhat. Recently, reviews for DDS2 over the last 30 days are predominantly negative, with only a quarter of recent reviewers giving it a thumbs up. Interestingly, even the first game in the series experienced a similar dip, though it still enjoys “very positive” reviews overall (with the exception of the most recent reviews which stand out as “overwhelmingly negative”).

Players’ abrupt dislike towards the games is not difficult to trace – it has nothing to do with the actions of the Byterunners studio developers. Instead, it seems that players have started review bombing following the announcement of an investigation into Schedule 1, a simulation game about handling “substances.” This game skyrocketed in popularity on Steam and regularly surpassed Drug Dealer Simulator 2, reaching a peak of 459,075 concurrent players yesterday (as per SteamDB).

Players defend the addictive indie game

Following a thorough examination, it appears Movie Games discovered that the TVGS independent game contains several components similar to those protected by copyright from the DDS series. It seems their team may have taken these elements as inspiration. Although the investigation continues, it looks like the company might consider pursuing financial reimbursement if due.

If someone is well-versed in the opinions of gamers, especially their standpoints regarding game publishers, their response to the situation likely won’t come as a shock. On Steam, DDS2 received an overwhelming number of negative reviews and lively discussions on its subforum. Users on the platform openly criticized the independent studio for supposedly creating a similar game and achieving greater success than the publisher. Some players even leveled accusations at DDS2, although it’s challenging to determine their validity due to the bias towards exaggeration and dislike of the publisher in the descriptions provided.

It’s important to mention that following the release of the initial findings from the “comparative analysis,” Movie Games’ stock price increased, although this essentially brought it back to its value before the March drops. However, today, the company’s shares have dropped nearly to their pre-announcement level, at least initially on Stooq.pl. Could it be that shareholders were deterred by the negative reception of “Drug Dealer Simulator 1” and “2” on Steam?
