In The Bad Batch series, Asajj Ventress made a comeback following her apparent demise in the Dark Disciple book. With the release of Tales of the Underworld, we can now understand how Ventress managed to survive her fateful encounter with Count Dooku.
It’s a common trope that characters in superhero comics and Star Wars don’t truly stay deceased. For instance, Palpatine miraculously reappeared, Darth Maul cheated death after being split in half and plummeting from great heights, Boba Fett managed to escape the Sarlacc pit, Chewbacca was absent from the ship… (In other words, there’s a long list of characters who have defied death).
Today’s topic is Asajj Ventress, once an assassin during the Clone Wars era who later became a bounty hunter. The series “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld” was released on May 4th, and its first three episodes delved into her storyline, offering a glimpse back at how she managed to survive her demise in “Dark Disciple”.
How did Ventress die in Dark Disciple?
In the gripping tale of “Dark Disciple”, I tragically met my end, succumbing to the lethal force of Count Dooku’s Force Lightning.
Or:
I met a grim end in the pages of “Dark Disciple”. It was Count Dooku’s deadly Force Lightning that took my life.
Both sentences convey the same information but are written in different styles to provide variety and engagement.
In the story, the Jedi Council dispatches Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos on a mission to eliminate Count Dooku. Accompanying him is Ventress, and as their journey unfolds, they develop romantic feelings for each other. However, Vos gets apprehended by Dooku, enduring torture which ultimately leads him to embrace the dark side.
In the end, she successfully guides Vos towards the side of righteousness. However, Dooku attempts to strike him down with a bolt of Force Lightning. In an instant, Asajj Ventress steps in to shield him, but it’s her who falls at the hands of Dooku instead.
Towards the conclusion of the tale, Quinlan and Obi-Wan journeyed to Dathomir for the burial of Ventress, submerging her corpse in a body of water. The water transformed into a green hue, signaling that the deceased Nightsisters accepted Ventress’ return among them.
The narrative of Dark Disciples was initially designed for the Clone Wars television series, but when it got cancelled prior to its revival by Disney, it was instead developed into a canonical book that was published in 2015.
When did Ventress die?
Ventress died in 19 BBY, towards the end of the Clone Wars.
As an ardent Star Wars fan, I’ve delved into the intricacies of the timeline, and from what I gather from the official Star Wars Timelines book, the storyline of Dark Disciple kicks off in 20 BBY. However, given that she’s already sans her red lightsabers when the novel begins, it suggests that the narrative unfolds after the Clone Wars episodes ‘To Catch a Jedi’ and ‘The Wrong Jedi’, which are set in 19 BBY and depict her losing them. It’s a bit of a tangled web, if you ask me!
How did Ventress survive?
Asajj Ventress is resurrected by Darksister magic after her death at the hands of Count Dooku.
The story of the Underworld begins as Quinlan Vos and Obi-Wan bring her lifeless body back to Dathomir, where they submerge it in a pool. Just before he does, a solitary tear rolls down his cheek into her hand – a moment emphasized by a sound effect – signifying its significance, and he whispers, “I will forever cherish you.
After entering the water, she regains consciousness, yet remains undetectable to the Jedi in terms of sight and sound. Mother Talzin’s voice whispers, “You have perished, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
The voice speaks, ‘The Jedi’s words are a present for you.’ Facing a dilemma, she is offered two paths: align with the deceased Nightsisters, or rejoin the world of the living. To return, she must relinquish her deepest longing (Vos), and that is what she does.
In other words, Tales of the Underworld doesn’t contradict Dark Disciple; instead, it carries on the narrative as if those events – namely, Boba Fett falling into the Sarlacc pit and Maul being bisected – had already transpired.
