Though many know Michael Pennington from his role in Star Wars, he first gained recognition as a stage actor long before appearing in Return of the Jedi.

Born on June 7, 1942, in Cambridge, Michael Pennington dedicated his career to performing Hamlet. He played the title role at university and multiple times professionally, including as Fortinbras in Peter Hall’s 1965 production, Laertes in 1969, Hamlet again in 1980, and later, both Claudius and The Ghost in 1994.

Starting in 1964, he worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Later, in 1986, he founded The English Shakespeare Company. He then created and performed in a popular one-man show focusing on Anton Chekhov, and afterward, he wrote a book about the playwright’s life and work.

I’ve seen Robert Hardy in so many great shows over the years! He was fantastic in period dramas like Middlemarch and The Tudors, and I always enjoyed his appearances in detective series like Endeavour and Father Brown. He even played Freud once, which was brilliant! And, of course, who could forget him as Sherlock Holmes in The Return of Sherlock Holmes? He really was a versatile actor – I even remember seeing him in The Bill and Raised by Wolves!

According to The Telegraph, actor David Pennington found the attention he received from being in Star Wars somewhat humorous. He mentioned in 2003 that despite having a 20-year stage career since then, he still receives autograph requests from people hoping he’ll return to acting.
