RetroRealms Special Edition Preorder Summons Michael Myers To Your House This Halloween

As a long-time fan of horror movies and retro gaming, I must say that RetroRealms Arcade has truly captured my heart! The fact that it combines two of my greatest passions – 16-bit graphics and classic horror franchises – is simply brilliant.

On October 18, RetroRealms Arcade and its initial pair of games, Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead, became available on digital marketplaces for both consoles and PCs. The physical editions were originally slated for release the same day, but a minor delay has pushed back the $50 Double Feature to October 25 and the $80 Special Edition to October 31. Interestingly, the October release date for a two-game pack that includes a game featuring Michael Myers as the playable character is quite fitting, given that RetroRealms Arcade’s Collector’s Edition comes with an endearing yet scary Michael Myers stuffed toy. Furthermore, this collector’s edition stands out as one of the most budget-friendly options for collectors this year, as the extra $30 you pay gets you a charming plush toy, a collectible VHS-style box, and a poster.

You can now pre-order the Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead RetroRealms Double Feature Special Edition for Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox through Amazon. Each pre-ordered physical edition comes with a set of Halloween trading cards and two extra playable characters, each featuring unique gameplay styles. Note that these games are only available together physically, but you can opt to purchase them individually for $25 each in digital storefronts. The standard Double Feature edition retails at $50 whether you prefer a physical or digital copy.

Preorders for both physical editions (Standard and Special) of the game come bundled with two playable characters: Laurie Strobe from the Halloween movies and Kelly Maxwell from Ash vs Evil Dead TV series. Usually costing $5 separately, these bonus characters offer unique move sets, storylines, and even their own achievements. The digital edition only provides access to these characters until November 17, but physical editions also come with a pack of Halloween trading cards, which is an exclusive feature not included in the digital version.

It appears that DLC vouchers and trading cards are extra items included with the physical versions of the game at launch. While there might be a chance to acquire them post-launch, it seems unlikely that future batches will contain the bonus characters. The offer is referred to as a “Day One Edition Bonus” in digital listings. The Special Edition consistently includes these extras, but collector’s editions typically don’t have additional reprints once they’re sold out.

Since its debut in August, RetroRealms may not have been widely recognized, but if you’re a fan of vintage-style games with pixelated visuals and horror films, this title deserves your attention. It garnered an impressive 8/10 in our RetroRealms Arcade review due to its meticulously crafted platforming segments, responsive controls, and outstanding 16-bit graphics and animations. The launch games, Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead, skillfully utilize the beloved characters and settings from these legendary franchises. The cross-over possibilities of RetroRealms seem to be setting the stage for a thrilling horror multiverse adventure. Each game is played by interacting with its arcade cabinet in the 3D hub world. As more games are added as paid DLC, RetroRealms Arcade is poised for success as a tribute to both classic horror movies and retro gaming.

We’re quite hopeful about the growth of this horror-themed arcade or museum, especially considering that WayForward, the game studio responsible for it, has a strong history of creating memorable games spanning multiple genres, with a significant focus on side-scrolling action-platformers. Notably recognized for its enduring Shantae series, WayForward also boasts an extensive portfolio of licensed games and reboots/sequels of inactive franchises such as River City Girls, Yars Rising, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, The Mummy Demastered, among others.

As a passionate gamer here, I’m excited to share that the same team behind RetroRealms Arcade, my go-to gaming hub, also brought us the 2022 multiplayer Evil Dead game – an epic experience! Now, get this: They’re cooking up something even bigger for Halloween, and who else but the legendary John Carpenter, the maestro behind the original film, is joining forces with them on this project. It promises to be a chilling ride!
