Retro Publisher Admits SNES And Genesis Re-Releases Contain “Uncredited” Fan Translations

Retro-Bit Publishing, known for re-releasing primarily Japan-exclusive 8-bit and 16-bit games on contemporary gaming systems, has been under scrutiny for allegedly using existing fan translations in their ports without giving credit. The company admitted to these claims, stating that they will provide a way to rectify this issue for the translators whose work was not acknowledged.

Here are four video games under scrutiny: Shockman Zero, Assault Suits Valken, Gley Lancer, and Majyuo: King of Demons. These allegations were initially brought up by translator Krokodyl on their blog, who pointed out similar dialogue across multiple games and custom fonts created by enthusiast translators as evidence. The strongest proof can be found in Gley Lancer, where fan translator MIJET included their name in the Japanese version of the game’s credits within Retro-Bit’s release, demonstrating that someone else’s work was incorporated without proper attribution. Krokodyl emphasizes in their blog post that Retro-Bit declared in a public Q&A that they did not use any existing script or prior work for these re-releases.

Following our internal deliberations, Retro-Bit acknowledged that the final project included unacknowledged work, to varying extents. In a communication to Time Extension, we admitted this was a lapse in responsibility on our part for not properly crediting the work and for failing to verify the submitted translation. To rectify the situation, we will strive to contact those whose contributions were overlooked, with the intention of finding a fair resolution.

Retro-Bit announced they are postponing upcoming rereleases, so they can thoroughly examine the current situation and prevent it from happening again.

It’s not just Retro-Bit facing issues recently; earlier this month, Limited Run Games had to apologize for selling video game cartridges that potentially harmed NES consoles because of an incompatible voltage level.
