Resurrected Anime MMO Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Will Release In The West This Year

The revamped version of the MMORPG known as Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is not a mere resurrection, but a fresh take on the original Blue Protocol, developed by an entirely new team. Unlike its predecessor, it’s set to have a Western launch later this year.

Reminders: You might recall that Blue Protocol was a much-anticipated MMO from Bandai Namco, under development for quite some time. It debuted in Japan in the year 2023, and it was initially planned to be released in the West through Amazon Games in 2024. However, the game didn’t manage to attract a large player base, and last year Bandai Namco announced that they would cease support for Blue Protocol starting from January 2025, with the Western release being canceled as well.

Moving forward to the present, Chinese gaming colossus Tencent has entered into an agreement with Bandai Namco for utilizing Blue Protocol’s resources. Working under a fresh studio named Shanghai Bokura Network Technology, they have essentially redeveloped and are preparing to re-launch Blue Protocol under the title of Star Resonance. Expected to hit the shelves this year on platforms such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, and mobile devices, it will support cross-play and cross-progression across different platforms.

Despite the fact that Blue Protocol: Star Resonance has been officially confirmed for a Western launch, an exact release date remains undetermined. The initial Blue Protocol was intended to debut on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC; however, currently, it seems that Star Resonance is planned for PC and mobile platforms exclusively.

In China, Blue Protocol: Star Resonance has been playable in a beta version, and testers have noticed several changes from the original version by Bandai Namco. While maintaining an anime-style aesthetic, the game’s visuals are now more similar to that of Genshin Impact. Players have also reported major alterations in combat mechanics, improvements across multiple progression systems, and the introduction of new classes. Although it will incorporate some gacha elements like Genshin Impact, these will be limited to cosmetic items such as costumes and weapon skins.
