Resident Evil RE:Verse servers permanently closed after serving “original purpose”

On June 29, 2025, just under three years since its debut, Capcom decided to close the servers for the game Resident Evil RE:Verse.

Introduced alongside Resident Evil Village in 2022, this game served as a commemorative title for Resident Evil’s 25th anniversary, available exclusively online.

In this game setup, players can choose between two roles: they can take on the role of survivors who must figure out puzzles, battle opponents, and make their way out of an enclosed area; alternatively, they could play as the infected, whose objective is to hinder the survivors’ escape.

Back in February 2025, Capcom shared some disappointing news on their blog (which is sadly no longer accessible), announcing the shutdown of RE:Verse. They explained that this multiplayer mode for Resident Evil would be closing its doors, leaving us gamers to find new ways to fight off those pesky zombies together.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, we created Resident Evil RE:Verse. Since its launch, your incredible enthusiasm for the game has surpassed all our initial expectations.

With the series reaching a significant milestone, we believe that Resident Evil Re:Verse has accomplished its initial, joyful intent exceptionally well.

The final day

According to Capcom’s explanation, that’s the reason provided, but it’s not a secret that RE:Verse struggled to attract players. On Steam, this multiplayer-only game reached its highest number of players ever, which was 2,080, in October 2022.

Starting from December 2022, it consistently failed to attract over ninety players simultaneously.

During the last day before it was set to retire, there was a massive 264% increase in people showing interest in RE:Verse. However, this surge only led to a maximum of 86 players playing within that 24-hour period.

Re:Verse saw a 200% jump in players on its final day, to a peak of 91 players.

It’s likely that Steam Charts continues to record players online because some users are keeping their games open on the main menu, and Steam interprets this as ongoing gameplay.

Well, it’s bittersweet to bid adieu to RE:Verse, but Resident Evil as a whole? It’s thriving like never before! Capcom’s been knocking it out of the park with one critically acclaimed release after another. Here’s to hoping they strike gold yet again with Resident Evil Requiem next year. I can hardly wait!
